1 26 15 Lecture 5 Mindsets o Fixed you have skills talents that CAN T be improved o Growth you can get better at things including intelligence o Weaknesses Growth take weaknesses failures as learning experiences and opening for improvement Fixed stay away from weaknesses o Motivation Fixed looking for outward markers of success Growth improving because you WANT to improve yourself o Motivator Hygiene Theory Motivators make you feel like you ve done a good job give you satisfaction Hygiene what work environment is like pay safety benefits how comfortable your situation is Slade Plating Case Situation Ralph Porter s employees are manipulating time cards o Hours fluctuate a lot because of demand So if workers are done with their work fast they get paid for a FULL day even though they leave early because they are done with their work Tony Sarto head most respected worker on floor ringleader o Sarto s group is most technically complex on the floor do the hardest jobs are the most skilled Sarto s group is also very exclusive o Have similar values value hard work productive o A lot are related those who are not are Italian Connection with ethnicity Clark s group all work together as well 2nd highest productivity o Also hard work pretty skilled productive o Not related o Also has a person who punches time cards at incorrect hours Herman Schell is lowest status worker o Brother of supervisor o Not very productive o Other workers have no respect for him not part of the clique Culture of Slade Plating o Value hard work technical skill productivity loyalty family share risk of involvement in punch card scandal Seemed that Porter knew about the time cord scandal but didn t want to change anything o Workers are not unionized paid lower but doing an awesome job Balancing out value their inputs so workers want to increase their outputs Workers don t want to change jobs even if offered higher pay o Loyalty to company and workers o Already cheating the system Porter s options o Don t do anything o Change the pay structure Piece rate Change raise structure o Increase surveillance Monitoring time cards o Fire ringleaders Cliques have purpose for work workers have mastery of skill and autonomy with time cards o They get enjoyment from the punch cards If you take that away their satisfaction may fall
