If a parent challenged a particular book you were using with your class what would you do Describe the steps you would take If a parent challenged a book I was using in my class I would first ask them what their specific reasoning for challenging the book was If it was a valid concern i would then explain why the book was chosen Next I would offer to allow them to observe the lesson to see if they could understand the value of the book in the specific lesson If that were not possible I would ask them to consider my perspectives and offer them any handouts or information I had that was relevant to the book I would ask them to read the book keeping my perspective in mind and try to get them to change their opinion Finally if I could not reason with them I would ask them to suggest a more suitable book in their opinion and if possible allow their child to use that book as long as their choice had parrallel views as a substitute If that didn t resolve the issue I would have them sign a consent form that allowed their child to be excused from using that particular book I highly doubt that it would come to that because the books that I would use in the classroom would have to be approved by the school and would not likely have any severely controversial subject matter
