RTV Test Prep Chapter 1 hardest chapter Media aesthetics study of visual and auditory perceptions and how these perceptions can be clarified intensified and interpreted through TV and film Worried about creation and perception Perceptions are critical EX I say the door is blue but you perceive it as red then to you its red Goal of art is to intensify interpret and clarify what you see to the rest of the world We do we study media aesthetic Media driven world we are all media producers You will understand how its made even if you don t make it What are the six media elements covered in this class 1 Light 2 Color 3 2 dimensional space 4 3 dimensional space 5 Time motion 6 Sound Who is Stuart Hall and what did he contribute to the literature of communication Hall was an academic who empowered the audience audience has an important role in perception audience structure is as influential on message as message composition Who is Marshall McLuhan and what did he contribute to the literature of communication the medium is the message The medium not only distributes the message but also shapes it and affects the way it is perceived Why is context important to consider in media aesthetics Context and media aesthetics elements around context Selective perception is an automated response stills craziness to important stuff at combats selection Selective seeing conscious process only see things you agree with or support Media Aesthetics are different from traditional Aesthetics Is concerned with how the medium affects the messaging M A Considers art and life mutually dependent and essentially interconnected because the Relationship between art and life is mutually dependent and essentially interconnected shared aspect of life through art Includes study not just of the product but also of the process of production Context The environment in which we perceive and evaluate perceptual phenomena Every aesthetic element operates within and is dependent on the context of all others Aesthetic Context Perception of aesthetic experience is influenced by its context Producers of media are responsible for interpreting the experiences of life so that others can participate in the communication experience on a deeper level Aesthetic Contextualism Responsibility relationship between aesthetics ethics Technology of television and film gives us the ability to manipulate messages Be concerned about viewers and influence Chapter 2 Lighting Lighting is the deliberate control of light and shadows to fulfill specific aesthetic objectives Lighting rarely works alone to generate an effect Three point lighting Standard Triangular arrangement of key back and fill lights Lighting triangle or The Photographic Principle Nature of light light is an energy form electromagnetic spectrum wavelength different waves register as different colors Video film and computer images are simply light controlled in various ways Light is referred to as having color temperature Sunlight Blue Artificial Light Orange Fluorescents Green Purpose and function of light essential for life and to see the world we interact in In media what does light have to do show where things are and what they are texture What can light do light can infer emotion emotion Why is lighting choice important Setting scene Falloff movement from exposed lit areas to shadows all about contrast bright and dark Fast fall off abrupt change in light and shadow Slow fall off gradual shift form light to shadow How is fall off controlled fill light something you try to control not create or eliminate Outer Orientation Helps the viewer identify the exterior visible characteristics of the objects and environments we see on screen time of day seasons texture of an object This is a major factor in structuring screen space 3 Types of Outer Orientation 1 Time orients us to the time of day time of year etc 2 Tactile orients us with the texture of the object 3 Spatial orients us in a particular space Inner Orientation articulate emotion set mood foreshadow events or create drama o High key lighting an abundance of bright illumination slow fall off and a light background o Low key lighting lighting is selective and most of the scene is dark Usually fast fall off Key light Not a style of light just refers to the main light source Placed on a 45 angle off the axis between the camera and the person Backlight creates depth and separates the subject from the background Fill Light Used to add light to the side opposite the key light Reduces the shadows caused by the key light Half the intensity of the key light High key lighting not about key light itself but light of room lots of ambient light in room lots of light newsroom Low key lighting shadows romantic dim Above eye is normal key lighting Why is below key lighting used scary movies Predictive lighting used to know what is going on or about to go on cop lights explain emergency 3 point lighting set up key light fill light back light Standard has key and fill at 45 degrees from camera backlight sets subject off from background Chiaroscuro lighting Lighting that emphasizes contrast between light and dark it is about shadows Functions of chiaroscuro lighting Lighting with the intention of producing fast falloff and high contrast between light and dark Intensifies 3 D properties Provides an expressive quality Articulates space Creates volume Adds drama Chiaroscuro lighting should work toward at least ONE of the following functions Organic makes the scene look realistic Directional guides the viewers eyes to important parts of scene Thematic light dark contrast emphasizes the theme Emotional effects us on a visceral level regardless of content Spatial compositional compositional balance Flat lighting Lighting that de emphasizes light dark contrast eliminate shadows Opposite of Chiaroscuro uses highly diffused light from many directions Very slow falloff and nearly transparent attached shadows Flat lighting does not emphasize any principle light source Often used in sit coms high key slow fall off Functions of Flat Lighting Flat lighting suggest efficiency cleanliness trust an upbeat feeling and fun Can also suggest mechanization depersonalization or disorientation Effects of shadowed lighting adds drama provides depth Rembrandt lighting Relies on shadows dim background but there is some background low key fast fall off Cameo lighting The background is completely obscured lights the figure not the background low key fast fall off
