Running head BOOK RESPONSE AND REFLECTION 1 Book Response and Reflection Name Children s Literature RDG 350 BOOK RESPONSE AND REFLECTION 2 Book Response and Reflection The book Blubber by Judy Blume has been read aloud to a 5th grade Language Arts class This book tells the story of a fifth grader named Jill who finds herself in the middle of an act of bullying during class Linda an overweight classmate is giving a report on whale blubber when the class bully passes a note around the classroom saying that blubber is a good name for her Instead of stopping the bully Jill participates in the name calling Things spiral downhill from there and Jill and her classmates torture Linda at every turn Throughout the book Linda suffers brutal humiliation at the hands of Jill and her other classmates The following activity is designed to allow the students to place themselves in Linda s shoes Each student will be required to write a response to this book from Linda s point of view Through their writing they will be given the opportunity to empathize with Linda while giving her a voice Through Linda s voice a conversation should take place between Linda and Jill giving Jill the opportunity to apologize to Linda and give her reasons for doing what she did Linda s response to Jill is should be considered as well They will acknowledge the fact that the lack of adult supervision made Linda an easy target Students will notice and make note of the changes that have been made to stop this type of bullying from happening at their school Finally students will outline a plan of action they would follow in the event they came into contact with a bully or if they saw a classmate being bullied Students will be given two class periods to work on this assignment BOOK RESPONSE AND REFLECTION 3 Lesson Plan Monday Read aloud Blubber by Judy Blume Tuesday Finish reading Blubber Wednesday Begin writing response to book through Linda s point of view Thursday Finish response and make corrections Friday Present responses to class Instructions giving Linda a voice Put yourselves in Linda s shoes Write a one page response to this book while Allow Linda to have a conversation with Jill and allow Linda to apologize and try to explain why she acted the way she did Explain how Linda feels everyday knowing that during lunch time there will not be an adult supervisor in the room to come to her aid On a separate page write about the steps your school has taken to make sure this Outline a step by step plan of action you would take if you or a classmate were to type of bullying does not happen ever come into contact with a bully BOOK RESPONSE AND REFLECTION 4 Blume J 1974 Blubber New York Bradbury References
