Topic Animal Science What exactly is Animal Science Animal Science is the care management and production of domestic animals Once an animal becomes domesticated it becomes dependent on man An animal is domesticated when man changes the characteristics of it For example take chickens Chickens are cousins of the wild jungle fowl except most chickens are in fact domesticated Chickens are domesticated so that they could produce better meat as well as eggs Animal Use as By Products Bones Bones are used for buttons glue and mineral supplement for other Fur Fur is used for coats and other items of clothing Hide Hide is used to make leather Leather makes gloves boots and other animals items Intestines and Stomach Tissue Intestines are mainly used for sausage casings but cat intestines are sometimes used as string for a guitar or other instrument Stomach tissue is used for strings for sports instruments Stomach tissue and or intestines are also used for lunch meats and surgical stitches Fat Fat is used for lubricants chemicals salves creams or salad dressings Glands Glands are used for medicine or food additives The most common gland used for medicine is bear This is one of the reasons why they are going extinct So What s the future of Animal Science Embryo transplants are part of the future Embryo transplants can help produce twenty calves from a single cow per year The reason embryo transplants are in the future of Animal Science is because they help speed up the rate of production to meet the needs of man Miscellaneous Terminology for Animal Science Cow A female bovine that has had offspring Bull A male bovine capable of reproducing Heifer A young female bovine that has not had offspring Calf A young bovine less than three years of age Ewe A female sheep that has lambed Lambing Giving birth ovine Lamb A young ovine Ewe Lamb Female ovine Ram Male Ovine Whether A castrated male ovine Dock To remove the tail of a sheep Foal A young equine of either sex up to one year of age Filly A female equine less than three years of age Colt A male equine less than three years of age Mare A mature female equine of four years or older Stallion A mature male equine of four years or older Gelding Castrated male equine
