How would you deal with a book that portrays negative values I would start by evaluating the negative portrals purpose For example a book like The Color Purple by Alice Walker which is quite the controversial book because it has several negative values that are being portrayed for the purpose of understanding the characters experiences and their effects on the characters and the overall lessons learned It addresses slavery racism domestic violence broken family structures religion and self worth all in one If the portrayal of the negative value is not necessary to the storyline or if the negative not a clear connection to the lesson that should be learn from students reading a the lesson I would find an alternative book that promotes the lesson I want my students to learn without using unnecessary presenting negative values
