MAN 3340 Exam 2 A few tips on how to study for the exams 1 You should use this study guide as an aid not the only source of studying Although I get pretty detailed and focus only on what she pointed out in her study hints it s still important to know the background of the information from her power points 2 Honestly I don t even have a textbook It s not necessary to be successful I missed one question last time and only looked at my study guide and her power points 3 Open all your power points scroll through the power point as you scroll through this study guide and try to literally memorize what s on the power points 4 Pay attention to the headings and chapter titles And from which chapters the bolded blue words come from 5 Be able to really understand the words bolded in blue and be able to understand it well enough to apply to a real life problem 6 Study the charts pictures diagrams Know what they are showing and identity what the point is in the chart diagram I usually put the main point across on top of the picture if Dr Pitzer explained it 7 It might even help you to print out this study guide and go through it twice and look through the power points twice Of course these are just tips I was asked how exactly I prepared for my exam last time and these are just some things I noticed from her last exam that I thought were important to pay attention to GOOD LUCK Chapter 6 Motivation Motivation is an individual mechanism Motivation A set of energetic forces that originate within and outside an employee that initiates work related effort and determine its direction intensity and persistence There are several theories that try to attempt to summarize the key factors that foster high motivation o Expectancy theory o Goal setting theory Motivation is fostered when employees are given specific and difficult goals Rather than no goals easy goals or do your best goals Goal Setting Theory It s between difficult and impossible that people are motivated When you set goals you should be SMART Specific Measureable Achievable Results based Time sensitive Need to know in X amount of time when it has to be achieved b c it helps you direct your effort o Equity theory o Pyschological empowerment An intrinsic form of motivation derived from the belief that one s work tasks are contributing to some larger purpose Fostered by four beliefs 1 Meaningfulness 2 Self Determination 3 Competence You feel like an expert in your position 4 Impact Instrumentality If I perform the expected level what is my outcome Where other people come in If there are poor methods in your work place for outcomes then it will be difficult for you to determine what the outcome will actually be o Performance Outcomes o Can be hindered by o Poor methods for measuring performance as Instrumentality could actually be rewritten to be Performance Evaluation Outcomes o Inadequate budget to provide outcomes even when performance is high o Use of policies that reward things besides performance such as attendance or seniority o Time delays in doling out rewards Motivation is highly correlated to job performance Motivation has a moderate correlation with organizational commitment Chapter 7 Trust Justice and Ethics says Ch 9 on study guide Trust Justice and ethics are apart of individual mechanisms Justice How we perceive the fairness Trustworthiness can sometimes be difficult to judge especially early in work relationship Justice relevant acts can serve as behavioral evidence of trustworthiness o Distributive justice o Procedural justice o Interpersonal justice o Informational justice 1 Moral awareness 2 Moral judgement 3 Moral intent Ethics A degree to which the beahaviors of an authority are in accordance with the general accepted moral norms 4 Ethical behavior Unethical behaviors Merely ethical behavior Especially ethical behavior Disposition Based Trust Trust prosperity A general expectation that the words promises and statements of individuals and groups can be relied upon Trust is moderately correlated with job performance Trust is strongly correlated with organizational commitment Chapter 8 Learning and Decision Making Learning and decision making is an individual mechanism Learning Permanent changes in an employee s knowledge or skill that result from experience Contingencies of reinforcement Employees learn two types of knowledge o Explicit o Tacit Knowledge More difficult to communicate gained with experience Common reasons for making bad decisions Limited information faulty perceptions faulty
