Allison Waters Multicultural Lit Final Exam 12 19 2014 We live in an age where we are constantly surrounded by media technology and of course the internet Things that people say and do via these mediums are clouded in a sort of anonymity Something said as a joke could be taken as a serious threat and something said in a non threatening way could be confused with blatant disrespect I think this is what happened with The Interview a film created by actors James Franco and Seth Rogen and production company Sony Pictures The movie features two talk show hosts Franco and Rogen that are going to do a show in North Korea They are approached by the CIA and asked to assassinate the leader of North Korea who happens to have the same name and appearance as the real leader Kim Jong un The film follows their quest with many antics along the way and finally according to an article by ABC News killing Jong un North Korea having heard the news of the film retaliated They hacked into Sony Pictures and released films executive emails and even threatened to hack into theaters if they dared show the movie In response Sony pulled the movie from the shelves of theaters everywhere instead saying that they might be offering a copy online for purchase This decision was met with tons of criticism from many people including celebrities who think that backing down and removing the movie from theaters would be an act of cowardice Comedienne Amy Schumer even goes so far as to say No bulls though this is seriously f and it s such a sad day for free speech Frightening Allison Waters Multicultural Lit Final Exam 12 19 2014 People everywhere want to add their two cents about how Sony is wrong for pulling the movie but I think that decision was in their best interests American relations with North Korea for the past few years have not been all roses and making a movie about murdering their leader would certainly upset Kim Jong un and his people Sony made a bad decision by not at least changing key points in the film such as Jong un s name and appearance and even making a movie on such a premise in the first place Backing down from the film and its message is not an act of cowardice but instead Sony Pictures trying to save themselves and clean up the massive mess that has been made Maybe next time they ll think twice before making a movie with such a political standpoint even if it is just pretend Allison Waters Multicultural Lit Final Exam 12 19 2014 Works Cited Rothanman Michael Nathanson Jason Sony Pulls the Plug on Dec 25 Release of The Interview After Threats ABC News 8 Dec 2014 Web Wong Vicky Celebrities criticize decision to pull The Interiview CNN 18 Dec 2014 Web
