The Fall of the House of Usher Narrator gets a letter from Roderick Usher The house is very creepy Roderick isn t feeling well so the narrator goes inside Madeline Roderick s sister dies they both bury her in the house After the burial the narrator thinks he hears Madeline through the house creeping around She ends up being alive and she is standing in a white robe with blood and she attacks Roderick and he dies of fear The narrator flees back home The house cracks and crumbles to the ground The Yellow Wallpaper by Charlotte Perkins Gilman A gothic story o Ambiguity o Dark themes o House mansions haunted settings The narrator is a woman who may or may not suffer from depression and a bad Husband John is her doctor and he belittles both her illness and her thoughts and marriage her concerns in general Her treatment requires her to do nothing active especially working and writing She begins to write her secret journal in order to relieve her mind Writes about the house and she s disturbed by the wallpaper revolting She ends up going crazy and says she sees another woman in the yellow wallpaper She soon becomes crazy ripping the wallpaper off the wall A White Heron by Sarah Orne Jewett A girl named Sylvia who lives with her grandmother Mrs Tilley and cow in New England countryside The cow hides in the bushes when Sylvia calls her name Sylvia knows the sound of birds and she heard a sound that she knew had to come from a person The hunter has a gun slung over his shoulder she was afraid of him at first Hunter realizes she knows her way around the woods and tells her he collects birds taxidermy Sylvia meets a hunter who needs a place to stay and is looking for a rare white heron He s willing to pay 10 to anyone who can lead him to it big money back in the day She starts to have a crush on him Sylvia has seen the heron before She decides not to tell him where it is and saves the bird It is very tempting to her and 10 was a lot of money back then The Blue Hotel Takes place at the palace hotel near a train town station in rural Nebraska Scully handsome owns it Scully meets three men and gets them to stay the night at his hotel The swede thinks everyone is trying to kill him even Johnny C Scully s son The cowboy and the easterner are baffled and angry The swede is trying to get his stuff to leave but Scully talks him out of leaving and 1 the swede 2 the easterner 3 the cowboy then he gets really drunk and gets boastful In a Far Country Not prepared for life in the North These two men were called civilized These two men think they were going to piggy back their way to riches in gold John Baptiste lead the expedition and hated the two greenhorns rush happily These two men were not good with outdoors These two men end up staying behind and the rest of the group leaves them They end up going crazy and killing each other at the same time Bernice Bob s her Hair Marjorie Harvey is tired of looking for her cousin Bernice who is visiting Bernice agrees to take all of Marjorie advices with posture clothes and to use lines similar to pick up lines Bernice uses the line do you think I should bob my hair All the boys start getting interested in her and soon even the boy Warren Marjorie likes becomes to like Bernice The next time Bernice uses the line her cousin Marjorie challenges her to actually cut her hair She cuts it and it looks really bad and she offends her strict religious surroundings She gets back at her cousin by cutting her hair at night and throwing it at the doorstep of her crush Warren A Clean well lighted place Blood burning moon Full moon rises as the woman of a poor singsongs against its evil spells Louisa works in the kitchens of the Stones the story of two men one black one white lusting for the same black woman named Louisa The story defines racial tensions between white Americans and every other non white citizen father The white man Bob Stone feels that he owns Louisa since she works for his Bob does not respect her because she is just a nigger Tom Burwell the black man is bitter at the relationship between whites and blacks saying that a white man can come in his house whenever they want and blacks can t do the same Bob lusting for Louisa one night decides to sneak down to the negro camps to make love to her of hiding He is arguing within himself debating why he shouldn t walk right to her instead Bob and Tom end up in a confrontation and Tom kills Bob As soon as the white men find this out a mob forms and burns Tom at the stake This story no matter how insane it sounds is a true depiction of the racial wars that went on long after slavery was abolished Blacks were still consider things to be owned and lynch mobs were the tool that kept those unwritten laws in effect Sweat The story covers several weeks in the lives of Delia Jones and her husband Sykes from a Sunday evening to a Monday morning with a brief flashback to the course of their relationship during fifteen years of marriage She works for both of them and his disrespected by him She has a scare when doing laundry and thinks his whip is a snake No longer able to intimidate by her husbands threats he plays on her fears by bringing home a real snake a six foot rattler in a soap box She is afraid of snakes He stumbles about drunk in the dark the rattlesnake bites him She just watches him die The Evening Sun Nancy is a black woman who has been filling in as cook in the Compson household during the illness of their live in servant Dilsey She has an unreliable husband and she has taken to prostitution to supplement her income She has been knocked down and kicked in the face by a white client from whom she demanded payment after which she not he has been jailed While in jail she has made an attempt on her own life At the time of the story she is visibly pregnant and Jesus her husband has gone off first vowing vengeance against the father Afraid that he will return and menace her Nancy begs Mrs Compson to let her sleep at the Compsons house but Mrs Compson will not permit it therefore except for one evening when she sleeps in the Compson kitchen Mr Compson and the three children escort her home in the evening Between the Compson house and her cabin is a ditch which she views as the likely place for an ambush After Nancy …
