Racial minorities comprise a very small proportion of the lawyers and judges in the United States What accounts for this What difference if any would it make if more of the lawyers representing criminal defendants were racial minorities There are a few reasons that minorities are so underrepresented in court personnel starting with the fact that some minorities tend to view the court system negatively and therefore do not wish to be a part of it Another reason may be that the minorities feel as though they may not be accepted therefore they may not want to go though the required education process to be a lawyer only to have to fight for promotions during their career I believe that our courts system would greatly benefit from more minorities in court personnel because minority defendent s may be more apt to respect and trust their lawyers and judges This trust could generate a better understanding between court personnel and defendent s so that the court system could be more effective I believe this because I feel as though a defendant may believe that a minority lawyer will understand what they have went through To say that the race of a person judging or trying a case will dictate how they will perceive or react to a lawyer representing criminal defendants who would be a racial minority would be to imply that the criminal justice system is biased and racist I disagree with this because I don t feel that it IS racist The idea that a person will not go on to school or to set a higher ambition for themselves to become a lawyer or a judge or that a person is not motivated simply because of their race is a crutch and is incorrect Any person who is motivated enough and willing to work hard enough can achieve any level within the criminal justice system A person s race has nothing to do with the position they hold or how a particular case will be looked upon Am I being naive I don t think so I think too much emphasis is put on the race issue and the fact that we attempt to locate seek and search for discrepancies for this issue continues to make it an issue It s embarrassing for us as a society and in the modern era that we live in it should be looked upon as silly A persons race should mean nothing a person s ambition and work ethic should mean so much more
