Chapter 1 The Pathway to Critical Thinking Pgs 6 7 Arguments The Common Ground of Logic and Critical Thinking When studying critical thinking we acquire skills and tools to construct dismantle arguments weigh evidence read carefully reflect on our beliefs Proposition assertion that is either true or false o Building blocks of arguments o Something is being predicated of some subject o Can function together as a body of evidence offered in support of a particular claim A premise is offered as evidence for accepting another proposition thesis Main concern is to assess quality of evidence as support for the thesis The conclusion should follow from the premises so if each were presumed to be true In a strong argument the premises provide sufficient support the conclusion would be as well There may be missing pieces and our task is to figure them out
