Jonathan Mangini Anthropology Prof Milena Lecture Notes 104 01 Marchesi Oct 7 BEYOND RACE Understanding Racism Race is Bad Science Human Genetic variation is continuos rather than discrete clinial variation No clear delineations between traits including skin color tone Plus there is more variation within a culture rather than between them Traits vary independently rather than together nonconcordance among traits Phenotypic traits we associate with race do not link up to deeper complex characteristics such as intelligence cultural abilities etc We have been enculturated into the idea of racial cultural character istic parallels Race is a Culture and Social Concept We are enculturated to think of race as being in the nature of things the way things are How is race constructed ular groups into races that create racial meanings One Drop Rule Public enemy Fear of Black Planet Wealth inequalities along racial lines have been longstanding and are in creasing Importance of a Definition Not talking about a prejudice at the level of individuals but about a social Racialization the social and political processes that transform partic phenomenon Racism the repressive and discriminatory practices policies structures be liefs and representations that systematically uphold racial categories and generate social inequalities based on imagined differences among groups Institutional and systematic at the level of government and other social and economic institutions with the power to implement policies Power is key Racism prejudice power to implement it How Race Becomes Biology that are 30 higher than those categorized as white Williams 2007 In the US individuals who are categorized as black have mortality rates An earlier onset of disease for minorities has been documented due to Could be from the power prejudice limiting the health resources to economic status those who need it
