DQ 1 Minimum Word Count 250 What is the importance of promoting collaborative communication in the health care environment Include your thoughts on the importance of supportive and defensive communication Collaborative communication is including all the people involved in a situation to cooperate and contribute together to come to a positively ideal outcome for all parties I believe this is extremely important in the health care environment because often there is more than one team working on a single concern for a single patient Having the cooperation and contribution of many people in many different expertise can facilitate a positive outcome for the patient and those involved in the decision making process Having the ability to use supportive communication will encourage interaction and enthusiasm with others to conclude a problem If we were to use defensive communication we would isolate people and give the illusion that blame is being placed on one person instead of looking at things as being shared faults or overlooked solutions In the article Intergroup communication between hospital doctors Implications for quality of patient careq D G Hewett et al Social Science Medicine 69 2009 1732 1740 a study was conducted to see how differences within specialties affects patient care and outcomes in a teaching hospital The study used patients with upper gastric internal bleeds to see how their care from ER to OR was affected by the different physician groups they would be assigned to The study showed that due to non collaborative communication patient s care was delayed and left room for concern We found clear instances where intergroup climate and subsequent interspecialty conflict adversely affected patient care The conflict over admission policies in particular created stand offs between departments and threats to withhold care D G Hewett et al Social Science Medicine 69 2009 1732 1740 D G Hewett et al Social Science Medicine 69 2009 1732 1740 The most basic of all human needs is the need to understand and be understood The best way to understand people is to listen to them Ralph Nichols Proper communication is a vital in the field of healthcare Everyone in the course of their lives interacts with health professionals encounters health related messages in the media has suffered from a serious illness or has experienced a loved one with a life threatening or terminal illness Some level of collaboration between health care providers is necessary in any health care setting In hospitals careful coordination of services between nurses nursing Reference Response 2 assistants physicians and a variety of healthcare professionals must occur around the clock In outpatient settings health care providers may operate at varying levels of collaboration depending upon the types of services offered No single discipline or specialty can meet all of a patient s needs A hospitalized patient for example may need a physician to provide a diagnosis and treatment plan a nurse to administer medications a nursing assistant to help with bathing and hygiene a phlebotomist to take blood samples a dietitian to monitor food intake a physical therapist to aid in muscle strengthening and flexibility and a social worker to coordinate home care following release Without communication among all of these professionals comprehensive and efficient treatment of the patient is not possible The style of communication is also vital among peers and patients There are ways to communicate that are both supportive and defensive Team productivity peer communication and patient conversations all suffer in a defensive climate On the other end of the scale genuinely supportive conversations are the foundation of positive and constructive personal and professional interactions A supportive climate encourages open honest and constructive interaction A defensive climate leads to competitive and even destructive conflict Defensive climates impair productivity communication and vital conversations They prevent new ideas from being spoken or heard and considered At times these climates are created when nearly everyone buys into a common viewpoint or ideology and sometimes they are generated by only one or two persons When emotions are hot people are easily susceptible to co creating defensive climates Cheesebro T O Connor L Rios F 2010 Communicating in the workplace Upper Saddle River NJ Prentice Hall
