History Exam 2History 1100Study Guide, Exam #2I. You will be asked to identify four of the following terms. Be sure to consider what, where, why and with what significance for the larger lecture discussion.(40%)- *Who, What, When* - SignificanceTriangle Trade - It was the trade between the colonies, Europe, and Africa. Tobacco, cotton, sugar, molasses, and rum were sent to Europe. Manufactured good (textiles) were sent to Africa from Europe. And slaves were sent to the colonies from Africa. - Slave labor is the basis for this trade because the slaves created the products that were sent to Europe and then as Europe traded with Africa more slaves were sent to the colonies to keep the cycle going. Showed dependency on other nations, because we could not get our own manufactured goods made and did not have the labor force available.Glorious Revolution, 1688- Occurred in Britain and was a change in the government structure. It gave much more power to the middle class. Also King Charles I was executed. - Significant because Britain’s parliament realized that they did not have much control over the colonies and it began the start of new taxes that the colonies are going to have to endure.Navigation Acts- The navigation acts occurred between the British and the colonies, and they forced mercantilismby making trade between the colonies and other nations besides Britain way to expensive.- Colonists resented the acts because they thought it was unfair and this began the conflict that would cause the American Revolution. Did this by angering the colonists and starting small fights, and the British enacting more laws.Proclamation Line, 1763- It was the line of settlement. Colonists were not allowed to pass the line because the government (British) thought that it would further anger the Native Americans and they did not want to go back into another Seven Years’ War and they could not afford it. - Significant because it angered the colonists because they thought that the British should allow them to have the land because they just won the war, and that there was all this natural resources that they could not use. Furthering causes to the American Revolution.Stamp Act, 1765- It was another act that made money for Britain. It forced the Colonists to buy a stamp for any legal transaction that occurred. Even newspapers had to have stamps- Further angered the colonists. They though that the British should not be able to tax without anyrepresentation. Another part of starting the American Revolution.Sons and Daughters of Liberty- It is an organization that promoted that Britain was violating the liberty. The men of the organization were of merchant and planter elite and got the common men to hold meetings thatprotested the stamp act. The women collected petitions to start a boycott to not buy goods that the British were taxing. - Significant because it started the phrase “No Taxation Without Representation” and furthered the cause of the American RevolutionCommon Sense- It was a book written by Thomas Paine that talked about why parliament was not the only problem but it was really the kings fault that there was so much conflict between the colonists and Britain. Monarchy was not the only problem.- Opened up the minds of colonists on who to actually blame for all of the new taxes and laws. It educated the common man on the basis of where all the laws were coming from.“No Taxation Without Representation”- The phrase came about in the book Common Sense. Pretty much said that Britain has no right to tax the colonists without the colonists having some sort of representation or say in the matter. - Further angered the colonists and gave a rallying call and ultimately gave another thing the colonists could complain about. Another cause of the American Revolution. Declaration of Independence, 1776- It was a document addressed to the King that stated that the Colonists are now going to be a independent nation not under the rule of the British Empire.- It is significant because it was the final straw that the colonists wanted nothing with Britain and those they felt that they could last by themselves with no aid. It gave all the people in the colonies a new sense of freedom without taxes and laws that were passed by the British.Political vs. Social Revolution- Political: Declare independence, and make ourselves a separate country. Social: one class overturns another class- Significant because a political revolution is able to convince the common man to fight for America’s independence while a social revolution is amore egalitarian rule at home. Gradual Abolition- It is the process of slowly freeing people. It was occurring in the colonies for African Americans. They did this by offering ways out of slavery. The north already had their slaves free. And freedom was offered if they survived in the war.- Significant because it made a drastic difference between the states that had slaves and those that did not. Caused conflict in representation of the state and federal government and election powers.Lord and Lordess- The lords and lordesses of Britain were those that were apart of the parliament and had blood connection back to the kind (very distant). - This is significant because when writing the Articles of Confederation the US wanted to make sure that everyone got a vote/say and not just the lords.Articles of Confederation, 1777-1787- It was the first form of government that the states in the US made. It gave pretty much all of the power to the states. In order to change something in the Articles of Confederation every states had to agree on it. They also created one house which was congress- This is significant because they created this form of government because the Colonies were in fear of turning into that they just fought to get a way from, a government with lots of federal government. Shay’s Rebellion, 1786- In Massachusetts, local farmers rise up against the Massachusetts state assemblies. Massachusetts was one of the only state assemblies that did not accept soft money policies and had hard money policies. The local farmers were in debt, and there was an uprising. Daniel Shay did not let the farms be disclosed on. - This event caused the realization that there needed to be more power in the federal governmentto control some of the states laws and to be able to control rebellions like this one.Federalists vs.
