Domestic Terrorism Cases Summaries A Needle in a Haystack Investigating the 1993 WTC Bombing A new era of terrorism in the US began on Sept 1 1992 when 2 men traveling from Pakistan arrived at JFK o One was traveling under the name Khurram Khan the INS agent could see the man s photo had been pasted over the pic of the passport his real name was Ahmed Ajaj for the next 8 months Ajaj remained jailed on immigration fraud charges yet he stayed in contact w the other man he was traveling with o While Ajaj was creating his disturbance Ramzi Yousef attempted to go through immigration and provided an Iraqi passport under another name although the immigration officer interviewing Yousef suggested he be detained her decision was overruled by her superiors because there was no space left in the airport s detention center Yousef and Ajaj met in 1992 at a terrorist training camp Yousef received help from Abouhlima Salameh Nidal Ayyad Abdul Yasin and Bilal Alkaisi All of the conspirators came from Middle Eastern countries and shared a hatred of the US much of their hatred was fueled by the fiery teaching of Sheik Omar Abdel Rahman Abouhalima had help funneling money through various sources including Muslim Brotherhood and various countries throughout the Middle East Ayyad used his job at a chemical company to purchase various materials and supplies needed to build a powerful bomb Salameh rented a Ryder truck and had to pay a 400 security Feb 1993 bomb exploded in underground parking garage tunnel deposit on it of WTC Six people killed and 1000 others were injured The first WTC bombing had up to that time cause more hospital casualties than any other event in domestic American history apart from the Civil War The plan had called for enough explosives to be loaded into the truck that would cause one tower to topple onto the other false Because of debris it was established that a car or tuck bomb had been used to transport the explosive material into the parking garage o Found a vehicle ID allowed investigators to trace the vehicle to the rental company Investigators learned Salameh rented the vehicle and reported it stolen he returned to the rental company to demand his 400 in Jan 1995 deposit back and agents were waiting for him there able to arrest Abouhalima Salameh and Ayyad Yousef remained at large for the following 2 years 4 days after the explosion the NY Times received a demand letter from the Liberation Army claiming responsibility for the WTC bombing ad demanded all aids to Israel be stopped Salameh Ayyad and the other were convicted by a jury and each sentenced to 240 years in prison they either denied their involvement or attempted to portray themselves as passive victims of Yousef s manipulations After a 2 year manhunt Yousef was finally captured in Pakistan The case demonstrated a new terrorist challenge for the US that involved individuals and groups with a global reach and funding from overseas who were determined to inflict mass casualties on American citizens The individuals involved in the first WTC attack had been implicated in the assassination of Mehir Kahane an event that marked a new era of terrorist activity in the US The subsequent prosecution of Sheik Omar Abdel Rahman and the identification of Khalid Sheikh Mohammed as a major terrorist operative were all important leads that emerged from the investigation of this case The case underscored the need to increase public awareness of the terrorist threat that had emerged in the US during the early 1990s Overzealousness The Case of the Sheik and His Lawyer Lawyers have an ethical obligation to represent the client zealously within the bounds of the law Rahman was able to escape to the Sudan where he applied for and received a US passport In July 1990 Rahman settled in NYC and became the spiritual leader of a Brooklyn mosque that was eventually tied to the WTC bombing Rahman accused the US of being the oppressor of Muslims worldwide Although Rahman was not arrested in the immediate aftermath of the 1993 WTC bombing an FBI informant named Sale provided startling new info that led to the sheikh s arrest recorded convos he had with people including an elaborate plan to bomb a number of NYC landmarks Rahman was accused in the indictment of leading a war on urban terrorism that included not only the plot of the NYC bridges and tunnels but also the WTC bombing and the Kahane assassination o Ultimately convicted of the charges against him and sentenced to life in prison Represented by court appointed attorney Lynne Stewart o Steward pursued the possibility of convincing officials of the US gov t that he should be returned to Egypt Officials from the Dept of Justice uncovered evidence that several terrorist organizations had threatened and carried out a series of terrorist acts aimed at securing Rahman s release from prison She was allowed to resume contact w client as she adhered to a serious of gov t restirctions Special Administrative Measures SAMs o Her meetings w client were monitored but she didn t According to gov t what Stewart made available to terrorists know this was Rahman himself Although Stewart later agreed that she had violated restrictions she argues that the ethical obligations imposed upon her as lawyer demanded her zealously represent the client also argued that the monitoring of their interactions violated her due process rights After 13 days of deliberating a jury found her guilty of 5 counts of defrauding the US gov t conspiracy and providing material support to terrorists up to 30 years in prison The Stewart conviction sends a warning to those who decide a venture into this treacherous area legal representation ends when material support to terrorists begins Thou Shalt Kill Abortion related violence is generally viewed as a form of single issue terrorism because it is intended to influence and change only those legal policies that relate to the termination of pregnancies The origins of Paul Hill s ideas can be traced to Match 10 1993 when Michael Griffin shot and killed Dr David Gunn near an abortion clinic in Pensacola FL o It was Griffin s killing of Gunn that thrust Hill into the national spotlight and sparked a series of related attacks o This was the first murder of an abortion provider in the Hill shot and killed Britton a physicians who frequently flew to Pensacola to perform abortions and his escort Barrett According to Hill s reasoning man made laws of societies might legalize certain acts such
