San Fransisco Preparedness Day Bombing Most terrorists use the defense of guilty because they are proud of what they have done and want to take credit for it Mooney used not guilty as a defense Mooney was born in Chicago to Irish immigrant parents Mooney s dad died and Mooney was forced to go to work at age 10 became a member of Internation Molder s Uninon went abroad while there learned about Socialism and the labor movement Returned to US and moved to California became member of Socialist party 1916 The Easter Rising was currently going on in Ireland and it was for Irish independence along with WWI San Fransisco had large Irish population and supportive of the Irish Independce movement The Parade in San Fransisco was to raise awareness and to convince the US government to increase defense spending named the Preparedness day Parade A of 5 10 170 pounds dark skin Mexican or Italian left a saloon before the parade began but there were people waiting for the parade to start The man left a suitcase outside the door of the saloon Large explosion during parade outside the saloon 10 people were killed A policeman got a hose and washed off the sidewalk and this cleared any possible evidence that would have been useful Known as a labor activist Mooney his wife Weinberg Billings and Nolan were all arrested 4 days later Billings prosecuted first life in prison Mooney s Wife Weinberg and Nolan were all acquitted Mooney receivd the death sentence but Woodrow Wilson took it down to life in Prison Problems with the case Mooney didn t fit the description of the man given above who placed the suitcase perjury Mooney was watching the parade with his family on a rooftop a mile away when the explosion went off picture evidence The man who gave testimony 4 years after the trial said he had committed The other man who had given testimony was not even in San Fransisco durig the parade 1939 Mooney and Billings were pardoned and released However Billings was not completely released until 1961 The Anarchist Bombings of 1919 Simultaineous terrorists acts carried out by Italain anarchists wanting to overthrow and cripple the corporations of US Capitalism June 2 1919 Targeted specific US officials 7 cities on the same evening 2 bombs in Boston Judge Hayden who had sentenced Italian protesters one month earlier bomb outside of Hayden s house no one was injured Representaive Powers was second target had proposed a bill that suggested 3 mandatory years in jail for people trying to overthrow the government No one was injured One in New Jersey and other things for workers Klotz was NJ Manufactures association who was against limited work week bomb went off at his apartment and no one was home or injured Judge Nott had sentenced Italian Radicals for long prison sentences Night watchmen was killed in the bomb explosion New York City Philadelphia 3 bombs one at church rectory one at federal judge house and one at home of US bureau of Inmigration Main tip in these bombings was that leaflets were found nearby at all places and were called Plain Words Circular Also the same type of explosives were used in all bombings The person who tried to bomb Attorney General Palmer s home had not run away in time and blown himself up Parts of his body were found on the street and he could be described as Italian with Curly hair The bombings were never solved but resulted in the Palmer Raids which deported immigrants who were believed to be anarachists Emma Goldman was an American born anarachist writer who was deported because of the raids Wall Street bombing of 1920 September 16 1920 Man drove horse and wagon into wallstreet by the Jp Morgan building Noon the bombs in the wagon went off and killed more than 30 people thought to be a be proven as the bomber because he fled to Italy The case of Giuseppe Zangara Tried to assassinate President Elect FDR Miami Fl February 15 1933 FDR hadn t taken office yet and he gave a speech from the back of a car Zangara stood up on a chair and shot five shots didn t kill FDR but did accidentally hit and kill the mayor of Chicago Anton Cermark Zangara was questioned without a lawyer by the police and others in jail and he confessed in his broken Italian American accent The defense tried to get two doctors to say he was mentally unstable but the psychiatrists never reached a legal conclusion The court found him guilty and snenteced him to 20 years for the 4 counts of attempted murder The second trial was for the murder of The mayor of Chicago and had a different judge He was convicted of murder and sentenced to death by electric chair in Florida 5 weeks later he was killed and last words were go ahead push da button Nazi Sabotage Plot of 1942 8 German men total were trained in Germany to carry out a plot on American soil June 13 1942 one german U boat with 4 of the men Dasch Berger Quirin and Heinck landed off the coast of long Island Dasch was chosen because had been born in Germany but spent a few years in the US Burger was chosen because he was a german who had come to US then went back to Germany but was sent to a concentration camp This mission would allow him to get out of the camp These men landed on the beach and their mission was to bomb major roads bridges and railroads in the US A Navy officer Cullen stopped the men on the beach and they paid him 280 to keep his mouth shut He went back and told officers but the 4 men had already left for NYC by the time the officers came back the 4 men partied it up in NYC with the extra money they had Dasch decided he wanted to turn them in and had no intiention of continuing with the plan because he wanted to be received as an American hero Dasch went to Burger and said that if he didn t agree with Daschs plan he would kill him Burger was fine with the plan especially because he had been a victim of the concentration camps Dasch went to DC to turn in the plan
