Final Project – Modern Popular Music History Playlist Goal: Students will apply concepts and thematic ideas from course material to trace musical influences across historical periods. For this assignment, you will trace the musical influences of one contemporary song back through American musical history. You will complete the following chart by selecting one song from each time period that either directly influenced the next decade’s selection or from a genre that influenced the next decade’s selection. You will discuss the musical characteristics of each song and discuss why you selected the song as part of your timeline. Include a YouTube or Spotify playlist with all of your musical selections. The final project is due Wednesday, July 27th at 11:59 pm. START HERE: •Select one song that was released between 2010-2020 (include song name and artist): •Discuss the musical characteristics of this song using at least 2-4 sentences: Complete the rest of the chart connecting each musical example to the decade before. •To start, enter your answers from above into the first row. •Then, select an example from 2000-2009 that you believe either directly influenced the song you chose above or is from a genre that influenced the song above. •Include 2-4 sentences on the musical characteristics of your new example AND an additional 2-4 sentences discussing why you selected the song as part of your timeline and how it influenced the next decade of popular music. •Continue this going back each decade. DecadeSong Name, Artist and YearMusical DescriptionExplanation2010-2020Late Night Talking Harry Styles 2022 Written by Harry Styles and Kid Harpoon, Late Night Talking includes the use of synthesizers and the kick drum on every second beat to lay down the foundation of the song. Harry also uses his own voice layered in the background to create harmonies and give the song texture. The 70’s inspired song has a danceable beat and is easy to sing along too due to its structure. The song starts with a melody that is later repeated with different lyrics and sticks to one chorus that is easy to remember and sing along too. N/A2000-2009Keep This Fire Burning Robyn 2002Written by Johan Ekhe, Remee, Robyn and Ulf Lindstrom, Keep This Fire Burning uses the bass and kick drum to keep a steady beat going throughout the song. The song also has the same structure as Late Night Talking. Robyns vocal timbre is in a higher more nasal range. The song was written in a duple meter.I selected this song to be part of the timeline because I found the chorus very similar to late night talking. It also has an emphasis on the second beat like late night talking. Keep this fire burning also has the same structure as late night talking, same melodic verse with different lyrics and a repeating chorus to keep the audience engaged. Synthesizers were definitely used in this song given the time and popularity of them.1990-1999Don’t Speak No Doubt 1995 Written by Eric and Gwen Stefani, this entire album was inspired by ska music. Very mellow guitar chords mixed with both the electric and acoustic guitar bring a lot of souk and tangible feeling to the song. Not much bass was used and the drums were used just enough. Gwens voice captures the essence of the lyrics of heartbreak and the uncertainty of what was to come of the relationship she was in. Although I believe these songs may not be super similar when you listen to them. I think Gwen Stefani’s vocal timbre and Robyns is very similar and that Robyn may have been inspired by Gwen and her transition from being in a group to being a solo female artist. 1980-1989Lorraine Bad Manners 1980Written by Alan Sayag, David Fareen and others, Lorraine is a ska inspired song with lyrics that talk about heartbreak. It includes the use of call-and response, a fast tempo and was written in a quadruple meter. The song uses a catchy chorus that is receptive. This song is the same genre as don’t speak. I think that the songs are very different but if you listen to them you’ll find hints of similarities. The way the guitars are used to create that “ska” sound is prominent in both songs.1970-1979Dont Stop Me Now Queen 1978 Written by Freddie Mercury, don’t stop me now starts off with just Freddie’s voice accompanied by the piano then breaks off into this wild banger with drums, guitar, and a fast tempo with the strangest lyrics. Queen is known to be witty and have fun with their songs which is perfectly showcased here. I chose this song because of the fast tempo like the song above. I also chose this song because Queen gave way to a lot of future artists when it came to creative freedom. I think that Bad Manners could have been inspired by queen because Freddie was also known for call and response. 1960-1969I Want You Back Jackson 5 1969Written by Berry Gordy, Deke Richards, Fonce Mizell, and Freddie Perren, this R&B/soul song opens with an ear-catching piano glissando that transitions into an upbeat song with lyrics sung by all 5 brothers. Each Jackson brought their own vocal style into the versus and captured the hearts of many around the world. I chose this song because I feel that the Jackson 5 had a big influence on groups in the coming years. Their versatile group gave way to groups like Queen and many others.1950-1959Tutti Frutti Little Richard 1957Written by Dorothy LaBostrie, Joe Lubin, and Little Richard, Tutti Fruitti is a fast tempo rock song that suites the style of jive dancing. Little Richard uses his falsetto and reach high notes and uses some riffs to show off this vocal abilities. The song is about a female lover despite Little Richard being known for being a queer artist during this time. This song is also inspired by the blues like many songs from the previous decade. I chose this song because like Little Richard the Jackson 5 always showed off their falsetto and their range in all their songs. I also find that their songs were vary danceable and catchy like tutti fruitti. Although I Want You Back is not by Michael Jackson I feel that Little Richard defiantly impacted Michael due to his lack of care of what others thought and their style of dress. 1940-1949Good Rocking Tonight Wynonie Harris 1947Good Rocking Tonight is a jump blues song written by Roy Brown. Harris did change the song a bit from Browns original idea but he added in the last section a series of raucous “hoy hoy hoy!” Interjections which were
