Introduction to Environmental Science 101 Dr. Justin B. Richardson Due October 17th on Moodle Fall 2022 You must show your work on calculations. Short answers must be typed. Assignments must be submitted as a word doc of pdf. 1 Discussion Assignment #2 Question #1: Exploring the Earth’s biomes and agriculture. Extensive remote data exists globally to explore Earth’s biomes. Here, we will use Google Earth to explore different biomes and how they are impacted by Humans. Please load Google Earth by going to Earth.Google.com in your web-browser. Start the program by selecting “Launch Google Earth” button. You can skip their introduction. You may need to zoom in/out to see things properly. using the “−” and“+” the buttons in the bottom right corner. 1A) Where are you? (country, region or city if possible) 1B) Based upon on the lecture on Biomes, what biome should be present here? Is it still present here? 1C) What are you looking at? (use street view ) Location #2: In the left bar, menu enter: 37°12'19.75" S 60°40'36.91"W latitude and longitude coordinates into the search bar. Here, we will explore using the soil textural triangle to determine the soil textural class. In further soils courses, you will learn how to use texture to evaluate land-uses. 2A) A Texas soil has 49% clay, 43% Silt, 8% Sand, what is its texture class? 2B) A soil in Oregon has 12% clay, 55% Silt, 33% Sand, what is its texture class? 2C) A soil in New Hampshire has 14% Silt and 74% Sand, but an unknown amount of clay, what is its texture class? Hint %Sand + %silt + %clay = 100% 2D) A soil in Massachusetts has 15% clay, 65% Sand, but an unknown amount of silt, what is its texture class? 2E) Open question (answer with <150 words), which of the previous 4 soils has the best texture for agriculture and why?Introduction to Environmental Science 101 Dr. Justin B. Here, we will quantify its effect in three capacities. 3A) A field has 42 hectares of unprotected soil and it experiences a severe storm prior to planting corn, causing the loss of the top 2.7 cm of soil from sheet erosion. If the soil has an average bulk density of 1140 kg m-3, how many kg of soil washed away? 3B) Using the answer for part A, if the soil had an average of 8% organic matter, how many kg of organic matter is now in the nearest river? 3C) Using the answer for part A, if the soil had an average concentration of 150 mg of phosphorus (P) per kg of soil, how many kgs of P is now in nearest river? Question #4: Where does your food come from? 4A) Please complete the following table and questions using food items you have chosen. You do not need to purchase any items, simply examine where the food of choice. Food can be fresh from a store, frozen, or canned. Some foods will take further researcher beyond the label. Category Food item chosen Price (include units) Country sourced/grown. Distance to Massachusetts (kilometers & miles) $ going to farmer, assuming 7.8% (see food dollar) Vegetable Vegetable Fruit Fruit Meat (if applicable) Grain or bean Your choice 4B) Which item traveled the furthest distance? Was the distance necessary, why or why not? (Please answer in < 150 words) 4C) Were any items locally sourced? Why or why not? (Please answer in < 150 words) 4D) Are you surprised about the distance any food item traveled and what would make it matter to you? (Please answer in < 150 words). 4E) Does the amount of $ going to the farmer appear fair? Why or why not? (Please answer in < 150
