Cosmic Calendar – Discussion 2Justice Hall Ivy Tech Community College Solar System Astronomy Professor Rakesh K Shah September 4, 2022Based off the research I’ve done I think it’s very possible that humans can/will go extinct. I don’t think the question is “will humans go extinct?” I believe the more important question is “when will humans go extinct?”. On the Cosmic Calendar dinosaurs existed for a week and went extinct due to an asteroid. Something like that happening to us in the future is unpredictable, but, there are other ways of extinction that are more predictable and could very well be the end to the human species and are just as dangerous as an asteroid or other natural disasters such as volcanic eruptions or storm surges. In my opinion human’s downfall towards extinction will be because of our environmental impact. We’ve singlehandedly destroyed our environment and are still doing it to this day. We tear down trees and disrupt ecosystems by replacing them with buildings, manufacturing companies, housing etc... Although there’s no way to predict if a natural disaster will be the end to the human species scientists and researchers have been able to predict that our negative impact on our environment could be the reason for more natural disasters, and old diseases being spread and re-introduced to humans that have not been a problem for centuries, could be the reason we wipe out our own species and many other species as well. Although climate change is unlikely to wipe out our entire species, it could cause many changes making it harder for survival such as food and water scarcity. I read in an article that I’ll cite below, that once climate change has been ignored and gotten worse to the point of scarcity of our water supplies drying up, that it could “potentially create conditions for wars that threaten humanity”. Regardless of whether it’s climate change itself, or humans reacting to climate change that could wipe out humankind,yes, I think humans will go extinct. Patrick, P: (2021, August 30).
