Most often used to describe the values and lifestyle of young people in the 60s and 70sNashville Sound/ Countrypolitan – A fusion of “country” and “cosmopolitan” sounds. Given its name because Nashville was often at the center of this form of musical development. Ray Charles – Born Ray Charles Robinson (1930-2004). Known as one of the greatest rhythm and blues musicians of the 1950s. Gained major success in 1959 with his hit “What’d I Say”Sampled – A recording process where a song is recorded or “sampled” with a microphone and then transferred into a stream of binary numbers that represent the profile of sound, quantized, and stored in computer memory. The digitalized sound sample may then be retrieved in any number of ways including “virtual recording studio” programs for the computeror by activating the sound from an electronic keyboard or drum machine.Polyrhythms – The simultaneous sounding of rhythms in two or more contrasting meters such as three against two or five against four. Polyrhythms are found in abundance in African and Asian music and their derivatives.Groove – Term originally employed by jazz, rhythm and blues, and funk musicians to describe the channeled flow of swinging, “funky” or “phat” rhythms.Urban Folk Music – An acoustic guitar-based musical style aloof from the new styles and large-scale changes that characterized pop-music in the 1960s.Greenwich Village, New York City - Known in the late 19th to mid-20th centuries as an artists' haven, the bohemian capital, and the East Coast birthplace of the Beat movement. Home to many folk artists such as Bob Dylan.Newport Folk Festival - An American annual folk-oriented music festival in Newport, Rhode Island, which began in 1959 as a counterpart to the previously established Newport Jazz Festival. The festival features performances by folk, blues, country, bluegrass and folk rock musicians, and since 1990s has featured performers from related contemporary genres, such asalternative country, indie folk and folk punk.Bob Dylan in 1965 – The most pivotal year in Bob Dylan’s career, where he moved from being the most distinctive songwriter among American urban folk artists to being an epochal influence on the entirety of American popular culture.Summer of Love – The Summer of 1967, where many young newly self-aware counterculture participants followed the lyrics of pop songs and “headed for San Francisco with flowers in theirhair.” Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band – A revolutionary work of pop musical art by the Beatles.Considered one of the greatest albums of all time. Despite its counterculture references it enjoyed commercial success as well.Psychedelic Rock – the “alternative” rock inspired in part by the Beatles’ experimentalism that formed in San Francisco in the mid to late 60s.Acid Rock – A musical style that was heavily dependent on dense musical texture with plenty ofvolume and lots of electronic distortion.Haight-Ashbury, San Francisco – A legendary center of counterculture movement that was particularly important during the Summer of Love.Hippie Movement – Centered in the Haight-Ashbury district of San Francisco, the hippie movement described the generation of young “self-aware” participants of the acid and psychedelic rock movements.Monterey Pop Festival – An annual music festival held in Monterey, California.
