PROFESSIONAL APPEARANCE AT WORKProper grooming and a professional appearance are important to gain respect in the workplace. The way you look and carry yourself creates an impression on the people you work alongside. Both men and women should take care of and look after themselves.GROOMING - Employees are expected to maintain appropriate and professional hairstyles. Hair, beards,sideburns, and mustaches must be clean and neatly groomed. Hair must be properly restrained for its length and job assignment. Hair coloring should be within the range of natural hair colors.Grooming Policy - Employees are often the face of the employer's organization, projecting a public image to customers, clients and colleagues. As a result, employers often require certain grooming standards for employees, especially those with significant customer or client contact. A grooming policy should reflect the needs of the employer while not unnecessarily restricting employeeindividual expression. The more formal or professional the culture, and the more employees interact with individuals outside of the workplace, the greater the need for employers to have a policy governingemployee grooming and hygiene. Additionally, some organizations, especially those that require employees to operate heavy and dangerous machinery, may require grooming standards to satisfy safety hazards.APPROPRIATE PROFESSIONAL APPEARANCE - This usually means at least a dress shirt and slacks for men and a nice skirt or slacks with a blouse for women. Take note of how employees seem to dress. When in doubt, stay on the conservative side. That being said, remember that your appearance, like your resume, is a way of marketing yourself.An interview is considered a “best dressed” occasion. Do not gauge interview dress by how you might dress everyday on the job. A suit is the most professional attire and is recommended for an interview.
