Isa Hussain Seth Scofield CST 151 Film Appreciation 6 December 2021 The Trial of the Chicago 7 Films are an excellent way to experience a moment as if you are living it. Aaron Sorkin was able to accomplish this with the film The Trial of the Chicago 7 (2020). Not only was the film a documentary, showing real footage from the past, but it was also a narrative film, with Aaron filling in spot to make the film flow better. Sorkin was the writer and director of the Netflix special film which, As Netflix describes it, “…was supposed to be a peaceful protest [but,] turned into a violent clash with the police. What followed was one of the most notorious trials in history,” (Netflix). The Trial of the Chicago 7 (2020) is a film that represents the events following the 1968 Anti-Vietnam War protest in Chicago (Wikipedia). Majority of the film takes place in the courtroom where the fate of the seven protest leaders is to be determined. These leaders are played by Eddie Redmayne, Sacha Baron Cohen, John Carroll Lynch, Alex Sharp, Jeremy Strong, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, and Noah Robbins (IMDb). Over the 129 minutes of the film, we get to witness the story of the events that led up to the trial of these seven activists. The movie was filmed in Chicago, Illinois with an estimated budget of 35 million dollars. Although they only made $115,709 dollars from box office sales, the movie’s main release was on Netflix. Sadly, this means that we do not know the exact amount of revenue made by the film. The Trial of the Chicago 7 (2020) was produced by Paramount Pictures, DreamWorks Pictures, CrossCreek Pictures, Marc Platt Productions, and ShivHans Pictures. One interesting tidbit from the film was that Aaron Sorkin had written the script for this film 13 years before the filming of the movie. In short, The Trial of the Chicago 7 (2020) is a narrative and documentative film that recounts the events of the 1968 Anti-Vietnam War protest. Although the movie did make any major advancements in cinema, the film is extremely accurate to the historical events, even using footage from moment of the protest in 1968.
