Structure & Function of the Human BodyWeek 1 NotesAnatomy - Study of structurePhysiology - Study of functionLife starts with an atom. Atoms will then come together to form molecules. Molecules form organelles. Organelles form tissues. Tissues form organs. Organs form organ systems. So remember, atoms -> molecules -> cells -> tissues -> organs -> organ systemsHomeostasisThe internal balance that is maintained in the body is referred to as homeostasis. The human body operates within a narrow range of temperature, fluid & chemical compositionExample of Homeostasis: Maintaining an internal body temperature between 97 & 99 degree fahrenheit. This normal range is called the set point or set point range. Homeostatic regulationHomeostatic regulation involves the following:● Receptor● Control Center● EffectorWhen an outside temperature declines, temperature receptors in the skin detect the decreasing temperature and send a message to the brain. Next, the hypothalamus in the brain receives the message that the body temperature is dropping below its “set point” and sends nerve impulses to the muscles. The muscles begin to shiver, causing the body temperature to increase. The CellTheir main job is to provide structure of our bodies. But, in addition to that, they are also responsible for orchestrating:● Respiration● Metabolism● Excretion● DigestionThere are 3 main parts to every cell:● Plasma membrane - The fluid outside barrier that encloses the cell.● Nucleus - The control center of the cell● Cytoplasm - The intracellular fluid packed with
