about it engage in it have fantasises have something that others might consider deviant and have something that we keep secret or hidden Just because we don t talk about it doesn t mean it doesn t exist nor does it mean that what we DO talk about is an accurate reflection of what s actually going on Know the general prevalence of sexual fantasizing e g what proportion of individuals share or don t share their fantasies with their partners o 1 in 3 people share their sexual fantasies with their partner Be able to discuss some of the potential risks and benefits of sharing sexual fantasies 3 out of 4 do not with a partner o Risks Partner may reject you because of the fantasy Partner may reject the fantasy see it as deviant Partner may be offended that you even have the fantasy Your exposing a hidden feeling and in doing so making yourself vulnerable o Benefits Sex life could improve drastically Partner may be down for practicing the fantasy You could be fulfilling a fantasy with someone you care about You re being honest and communicative in the relationship about your wants and needs Be able to distinguish between a general paraphilia and a specific fetish o Paraphilia Paraphilia is the sexual attraction or arousal that results from situations objects or individuals that are generally seen as deviant sources of sexual stimuli Can be involuntary don t necessarily seek it out o Fetish A fetish is a need or desire for an object or activity that is psychologically necessary for sexual arousal or gratification Foot fetish milfs sploshing etc Be able to explain how sexual behavior can be socially constructed and how we can define sex as a natural behavior HEDONISM o Sexual behavior is socially constructed because it is something that is learned through interaction with society others in society you learn how to have sex what it entails how to do it etc o Sex is natural behavior because it is a simple expression of seeking out pleasure and avoiding pain hedonism We want to engage in sexual behavior because it gives us pleasure Be able to describe what men and women tend to fantasize about in terms of sex o Male Fantasy Men tend to fantasize about taking control of their partner sexually NOT Rape He wants her to want him to take control of her A pure expression of gender based norms o Males dominant females submissive o Female Fantasy Women tend to fantasize about being taken control of by their sexual partner To evoke sexual tension highten or intensify the experience He wants me so badly he must have me Be able to define token resistance in your own words and how it is different from non consent occur o Token Resistance occurs when someone usually women resist refuse sex when they actually intend to engage in sex o Appearing to put up a front when in actuality they re inviting the domination to o Basically playing hard to get with expectations hopes of being got o Part of a sexual script o Blurs the line of consent Non consent is actual refusal of sex and clear non interest in engaging in it Understand how norms of sexual behavior are related to the moral order and how they are related to social norms of gender o Moral order is the behaviors attitudes and objects for which we have venerable respect o Norms of sexual behavior relate to the moral order because in different societies they determine what behavior aligns with the moral order o Moral order of sex in the West Women The Madonna The Whore Lady in the streets and a freak in the sheets Moral order women are respectable classy virtuous pure etc in society Men Power Strength Virility strong sex drive The same traits that are valued in the public are the same that are valued in private Know how men and women tend to differ in terms of their interest in sexual activity o Men s Sexual Interest Men think about sex more often Tend to seek out sexual contact arousal more often Tend to be more permissive Arousals are more direct Less affected by contextual factors and less need for buildup o Female Sexual Interest Tend to be interested in the buildup even need it Need to be warmed up and in the right mood for sex Tend to be interested in sensual feelings based sex Know the major components of the definition of fantasy and how this definition can be related to pornography o Fantasy An image created in the imagination An unrealistic and impractical idea In response to an ungratified need o Pornography in most cases is exaggerated unrealistic and impractical images videos in response to unmet sexual needs or desires Be able to give several logical reasons for the use of pornography that is why individuals use pornography o o o o Individuals watch porn because their expectations for sex are not aligning with reality so they turn to fantasy Individuals watch porn because they enjoy being sexually stimulated Individuals watch porn because it can meet their fantasies Individuals watch porn to keep their sex life healthy Understand the elements of the pornography fantasy from the deviant s perspective and how gender differences in use can be explained naturalistically o Sex in porn is uncomplicated on demand Women are hungry for sex want it badly and will do anything for it It s purely about sex no emotional issues or complications o Forbidden or deviant variations of sex can be explored vicariously o Gender Differences Men have more of an ungratified need for sex They already think about sex more often and seek out sexual arousal more often so if they aren t getting their needs met they turn to their fantasy exaggerated images in response to ungratified needs which can be found in pornography Be able to name and describe the three feminist perspectives on pornography o Anti Pornography Feminists Porn is patriarchal oppression and is offensive to women o Liberal Feminists o Pro Sex Feminists Porn freedom of speech expression Porn expresses a woman s freedom and choice to engage in pornographic activity either participating in porn or viewing porn See it as an advancement in women s rights Understand the moral factors underlying the perception of pornography as deviant and how users may be stigmatized manage stigma o Moral Foundations underlying deviant view of pornography Purity Equality o Moral Entrepreneurs religious people parents moms etc o Stigmas
