In order to be a successful leader one must learn to follow. I have chosen to write about my god-mother Dorothy Ellis. If it were not for Dorothy Ellis and God I would not be writing this paper today. Dorothy Ellis was born on May15, 1925 in Dillon County, South Carolina. During her childhood years she and her family were very poor and they live in a shack with no bathroom, but they had an outhouse. She was the fifth child of six children and that is how she acquired her leadership role.Dorothy said while in high school she saw pictures of magazines of beautiful houses and people with nice clothes. She decided that although, college was not much of an option in those days for blacks. She determined that it would be for her and her dream was to move to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania where she would be educated in the colleges in that city. In 1952, Dorothy moved to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in order continue her education and spiritual discipline. In 1953 Dorothy attended Temple University where she received her master’s degree in human services (social work). While working as a social worker for the City of Philadelphia Dorothy felt the call of God on her life. During this time in 1959, community workers, law enforcement personnel were conducting many meetings to stop the gang violence in the streets ofPhiladelphia. In this role that Dorothy displayed was more of a democratic role. She had the ability to take chargeof a bad situation and she was able to use her love for people to help turn their lives around. Herinfluence of being an inspirational leader. Dorothy’s influence filtered down to the children of those adults that she helped, I happened to be one of them. I was taught by Dorothy and my parents one must submit to leadership and have a vision so I can follow. I decided that continuing my education would not just help my family, but others as well. I have started an organization that will help elderly maintain their homes by allowing them to receive help by health care professionals. I also started welfare to work program with State of Pennsylvania in educating women and men receiving public assistance.
