individual differences may benefit you in many ways First it helps you better understand yourself who you are compared with others This understanding is very important for many decisions in your life including your career decisions For example what kind of job should I pursue or if I pursue a particular type of job what are my strengths and weaknesses to effectively perform in the job Better understanding yourself may help you to answer these questions more clearly Second it helps you better understand others The understanding of individual differences is a starting point of effective management of other people and of becoming an effective team player o Individuals are different in many ways One of the core dimensions is personality difference Among the many personality dimensions I want to introduce four important dimensions Personality A set of distinctive patterns or orientations in which individuals respond or interact with their environments o Personality difference is very important in three reasons First personality is powerful in predicting individual thinking patterns and behavior tendencies Second it is difficult or almost impossible to change Personality is developed through our entire lives and in our ages it is almost set It s much better to understand it than to change it Third however many people do not notice personality difference or do nor appreciate personality difference as normal and natural Instead they usually perceive it as something wrong abnormal or weird That s why personality differences lead to many interpersonal difficulties or conflicts How does personality impact OB o Personality and individual differences impact organizational behavior because of the link between individual differences and individual level work outcomes The individual differences shown on the left are on a continuum from relatively fixed at the top moving towards relatively flexible at the bottom The practical application for managers is that they should select employees for positions based on factors that are relatively stable intelligence ability They can then adapt the workplace using a variety of techniques to influence the
