Lauren Kurtz Prof Doug Lipton Prof Doug Parker TA Dennis Guignet AREC200 0103 11 February 2011 Severn Watershed Problem Set 1 1 It is difficult to manage every cove and estuary that flows into the bay because there is such a great amount of them This proves to be a complexity for restoring the Bay because it is difficult to supervise each and every individual one especially because all of the sediment flowing into the Bay comes from each stream 2 The Blue Crab and the Striped Bass are two examples of Chesapeake Bay living resources that are currently above their target goal for restoration as of 2010 3 When the Susquehanna River was impacted by a natural event years ago it formed the Chesapeake Bay impact crater This is an important physical characteristic of the Bay today 4 Although the amount of land used for agricultural purposes and production is nearly a quarter of the area of the Bay there is still a great deal of hazardous materials entering the Bay from this land The water quality will continue to decrease as long as there is a constant flow of manure and sediment from this land 5 Some sources of water pollution from urban lands are road oils salt septic tanks and animal waste Because the land is impermeable none of these sources soak into it therefore the majority of this waste ends up in the Bay 6 Some activities that produce air pollutants are driving cars and mowing lawns These air pollutants can eventually become water pollutants and greatly affect the water quality and cleanliness of the Chesapeake Bay 7 Nutrient loads can be controlled because the dams can halt water flow and can act as a mediator for the amount of nutrients flowing into the Bay The pollutants that this pertains to are nitrogen and phosphorus 8 I pledge on my honor that I have not given or received any unauthorized assistance on this assignment Lauren Kurtz
