Exam: ON 12/11/12 From 6:30-7:45 PMFormat:The exam will have two sections. The first will consist of multiple-choice questions (20). The second will consist of short-answer questions (4). Material:1. In general, you should be able to summarize the basic arguments of all the articleswe’ve read, as well as know how to object to those arguments, and how the authors might respond. You should also be able to apply an author’s line of reasoning to a novel case.2. Be able to present and explain Singer’s argument for famine relief and the problems with it. Know what “of comparable moral significance” means. Know that Singer is talking about obligations, as opposed to rights. 3. Be able to explain Hardin’s argument against famine relief and the problems with it. Know the life-boat example and its implications for famine relief. Know that Hardin gives a consequentialist argument. Know what a “ratchet effect” is and what role this notion plays in Hardin’s argument. 4. Be able to explain Nielsen’s argument for famine and the problems with it. Know what “carrying capacity” is.5. Be able to explain Hosper’s argument for libertarianism and the problems with it. Know the distinction between freedom and liberty. Know the distinction between negative and positive rights. Know what libertarianism is, its relation to autonomy, taxes, and its main theses. Know the distinction betweenownership and stewardship. Be able to explain that libertarianism is based on the over-arching value of selfdetermination.6. Be able to explain Nielsen’s argument about economic justice (socialism furthers the value of selfdetermination better than libertarianism) and the problems with it. Know what socialism is anMUST KNOW!!!!!!!!
