Lauren Kurtz Kevin Faranetta Erika Woolley Emma Glasgow 1 Hugh Turner BMGT110 FP06 15 October 2009 Operating Plan Approximately one week before freshmen residents move into their dorm rooms their Resident Assistants also known as RA s prepare the rooms This preparation includes leaving a few informative welcoming papers and gifts With Terp Green s new system water bottles would be waiting in each freshman s dorm room for them upon their arrival In order to obtain these water bottles RAs would report to the site on campus where they are being dropped off directly from the manufacturing company Each RA will have a list of the freshmen that they are responsible for ensuring receive water bottles For freshmen students who live off campus there will be a list of names at the desk in Stamp Student Union where these students can pick up their bottle and their name will be crossed off This list includes freshmen connection students who live off campus and will begin as full time students in the spring semester These students will be strongly encouraged via e mail to pick up their water bottles at Stamp If a student loses their water bottle they are allowed to buy another one for the low cost of 5 00 Since it will cost Terp Green 0 66 to manufacture our water bottles we will ultimately be making a profit of 4 34 on each additional water bottle purchased We will be sure to always have extra water bottles stored in Stamp Student Union for students who lose misplace or get their water bottles stolen Our ultimate goal is for disposable cups to be completely eliminated off of campus after four years when the first class to receive these water bottles are seniors This way every student will have a water bottle and the need for disposable cups in dining situations will greatly decrease 2 However as a not for profit organization we will need a source of income from corporations business associations groups and campus clubs that support us in order to spend money The best plan for our business to get money is to communicate with many capital investment agencies and large businesses that are interested in putting their name to a service that would help the environment These businesses would be able to provide us with seed capital which would be the way we can fund our purchases Because they supply us with money we would put their name or logo on the products that we provide to any university Our business will distribute water bottles and recycling bins to colleges originally the University of Maryland Our original plan to get these products is from two different businesses The company 4imprint would be able to supply our business with 6 500 water bottles which would cost us 4 741 We could get 24 recycling bins from Global Industrial for 540 61 Upon delivery we would supply them to the University of Maryland which would distribute the products to their students under our supervision The water bottles would be in each freshman s room upon the beginning of the year The recycling bins would be placed throughout the school near garbage cans so it promotes recycling The cost that we would not have to fund ourselves but ask the University for their cooperation is getting biodegradable cups for their cafeterias Our business cannot take out the cups from the cafeterias altogether but just discourage the use of them We would ask the University of Maryland to spend the extra 1 8 cents per cup to help the environment Also we would ask them if they would lower the prices on drinks bought in our new water bottles which would also be a way of supporting our efforts to help the environment In order to organize and distribute our water bottles we will need a staff of employees with designated responsibilities The staff necessary for our business is very limited The main distributors of the reusable water bottles would be the Resident Assistants who would not need 3 to be paid in order to complete this task due to the fact that they already are assigned to distribute information and pamphlets to each student they are in charge of For those freshmen students who do not receive their designate water bottles through their housing bottles will be available at Stamp Student Union in the school store Therefore employees of the store primarily those who work at the cash register will simply distribute these bottles using a list of names as part of their already paid job To begin our business will utilize the volunteer help of students who participate in go green type clubs and organizations and other students simply passionate about the cause in order to sort through and collect the materials from the recycling bins across campus At some point in the future our business may need to seek out the employment of trash and recycling pick up companies Staff meetings will be held on a weekly basis in order to assess and evaluate the progress and tribulations of the business In order to make students on campus more aware of the business s efforts a table will be set up during the look fairs with a signup sheet for those interested in receiving contact and updates from the business The emails put on these lists will be added to a list serve and periodic emails will be sent out in order to notify participants of updates job opportunities etc Hopefully with the help of sponsors such as Under Armor along with the profits made from the water bottles readily available for purchase at the school store the funds needed to pay the paid employees of the business will be collected Our business just like any other one is bound to run into some legal issues Some general areas where all businesses experience conflict is meeting zoning requirements obtaining a business license and determining the exact type of ownership structure For instance every business must meet zoning requirements to ensure that the business activity and site are compatible Some businesses must acquire a general business license however in Maryland only 4 a business selling goods or merchandise must get a trader s license from the State Department of Assessments and Taxation Another common region of conflict is choosing a business structure by weighing the pro s and con s of a sole proprietorship partnership or corporation Some legal issues are specific to our business in particular the success of our company depends on cooperation from franchises on campus and some of the improvements Terp Green requires could be costly for these franchises Changing all cups containers
