DHE 462 Study Guide Midterm 2 Winter 2013 The examination contains 60 to 70 multiple choice questions Twenty of the questions will relate to five slides There will be three to five questions for each slide The slide portion of the exam will take place at the beginning Slides will contain two or three pictures featuring different or similar parts of the near environment Individual slides may contain pictures from several 17th century style periods To identify specific style periods use the characteristics and combination of characteristics that are the newest the new style characteristics would not have been seen in previous style periods Suggestion for studying style period characteristics one of the best ways to understand the differences among the various style periods is to make a visual and or descriptive timeline in which you can examine the styles of each period next to each other The examination will cover all information listed as assigned readings since Midterm 1 in the course outline in the syllabus and all information discussed in class for the 17th century Readings include all assigned readings this includes the Class Notes packet and discussion 17th century half 17th century second half The midterm will test your knowledge on the following 1 General descriptions knowledge of characteristics of styles including the adjectives to describe the general overall feeling of styles this includes how your textbook authors describe styles in general i e 17th century Renaissance Baroque Italian Baroque French Baroque English Baroque Baroque end of 16th to mid 18th century o Baroque city planning was used to aggrandize monarchs create dramatic effects and to meet changing needs resulting from the use of more wheeled vehicles Ireland p 400 o Built structures The relationships between spaces became more important and space became an experience the static became dynamic Ireland p 400 The Baroque style emphasized lavish ornamentation free and flowing lines and flat and curved forms It was massive rather than delicate Tortora Eubank 230 It had most dramatic lines shapes shadow color etc Great plazas bridges and avenues radiated from a central point The Baroque style began in the churches of Italy Baroque is heavy compared to other styles They wanted something exciting and that grabbed attention dramatic and theatrical they used design principles to achieve that and played with them even more than the Mannerist had Structures became secondary and decorative effects were given primary importance Ireland 401 Strong contrasts were used such as light and shadow plain and complicated smooth plaster and richly carved details Ireland 400 Curves become very important curves and diagonal lines create more movement and is more Striking light effects o Interiors French Baroque 1600 1715 Classical components re interpreted and used very freely Three dimensional ornamentation Style known as Luois Quatorze named for Louis XIV the Sun King o o Grandiose used the arts to glorify the monarchy o Leader in secular architecture Lofty complex roofs were typical of French Renaissance palaces and this form was retained during the Baroque Ireland p 405 o Francois Mansart credited with bringing the Baroque style to France in its fullest form He omitted many of the elaborate decorative effects of Italian Baroque where are limited to ornament rather than structural forms Ireland p 406 o Built Structures There are subtly more planes and surfaces Tempered by classical they tend to be the least Baroque looking It is minimal from France start of Baroque styles in England the new style Baroque started to spread under Charles II Charles II influence of English Baroque o With Charles II comes Restoration style with its Baroque curves in sharp contrast to the austere strait lines of the Puritan Commonwealth Ireland 408 Built Structures Palladian influences England Baroque had Palladian influence until the second half of the Century when Charles II comes back then changes to Baroque still influenced by Renaissance 2 After the Great Fire of London burned much of the city Englishman Christopher Wren great English architect of the period characterized a subtle Baroque style with classical elements Christopher Wren was the dominant influence on rebuilding London St Paul s Cathedral Has echoes of classism but gets a bit more exuberant The front has double columns and the towers has projections which styles of Baroque architecture o Interiors Castle Howard and Chatsworth are two buildings that are
