Lecture 10Heterosexual DevianceI. Paraphilias A. Definition : A paraphilia is a condition in which a person's sexual arousal and gratification depend on fantasizing about and engaging in sexual behavior that is atypical and extreme. A paraphilia can revolve around a particular object (children, animals, underwear) or around a particular act (inflicting pain, exposing oneself). Most paraphilias are far more common inmen than in women. The focus of a paraphilia is usually very specific and unchanging.B. A paraphilia is distinguished by a preoccupation with the object or behavior to the point of being ____________________ on that object or behavior for sexual gratification. Paraphilias include sexual behaviors that society may view as distasteful, unusual or abnormal.C. Types of Paraphilias (starting with most common) 1. Pedophilia (sexual activity with a child usually 13 years old or younger)2. _______________________ (exposure of genitals to strangers) 3. ____________________ (observing private activities of unaware victims) 4. Frotteurism (touching, rubbing against a nonconsenting person), 5. Fetishism (use of ___________________ objects) i. The term "fetishism" was coined in the late 1800s. It originates from the Portuguese word feitico, which means "obsessive fascination". There is a degree of fetishistic arousal in most normal individuals who find particular bodily features attractive. However, fetishistic arousal is generally considered a problem when it interferes with normal sexual or social functioning and where sexual arousal is impossible without the fetish object. ii. Fetishism is characterized as a disorder when there is a ______________ assignment of sexual fixation, fantasies or behaviors toward an inanimateobject -- frequently an item of clothing -- such as underclothing or a high-heeled shoe -- or to nongenital body parts -- such as the foot. Only through use of this object can the individual obtain sexual gratification. The fetishist usually holds, rubs or smells the fetish object for sexual gratification or asks their partner to wear the object during sexual encounters. Fetishism is a more common occurrence in males, and the causes are not clearly known. Fetishism falls under the general category of paraphilias, abnormal or unnatural sexual attractions.iii. Two types of Fetishisms: a. _________________Fetish - the object and its shape are important, such as high-heeled shoes.b. ________________ Fetish - the material of the object is important, such as silk or leather.iv. Inanimate object fetishists often collect the object of their favor. In some cases, the fetishism is severe enough to inspire the fetishist to acquire objects of his desire through theft or assault. Fetishists smell, rub or handle these objects while masturbating or ask their sex partners to wear the objects; male fetishists may be unable to get erections without the presence of the objects. Nearly all fetishists are male, though some women also exhibit fetishism.v. Other common objects used by fetishists are panties, bras, slips, stockings, other intimate apparel, footwear and gloves. Common materials other than those listed above also include rubber and fur. For some, merely a picture of the fetish object may arise the fetishists, thoughmost prefer or require the actual object. It is not about the person who hasworn the object, rather it is about the object itself. Examples of animate fetish objects include hair, legs and buttocks.vi. Fetishism excludes cross-dressing and objects specially designed forsexual use such as vibrators and dildos.vii. Common types of fetishisms:- Amputee fetishism - Breast fetishism - Corset fetishism (Tightlacing) - Diaper fetishism (infantilism)- Foot fetishism - Food fetishism- Furry fetishism/Toonophilia - Glove fetishism- Infantilism - Leather fetishism - Medical fetishism- Pregnancy fetishism - Latex/Rubber fetishism - Boot fetish - Spandex fetishism - Stocking fetishism - Swimcap fetishism - Tickling fetishism - Transvestic fetishism - belly button fetish 6. Sexual _______________________ (being humiliated or forced to suffer)and sexual _______________________ (inflicting humiliation or suffering) a. a term referring to the intenser physical sensations enjoyed by the masochist and given by the sadist; this term is uncomfortable for many people because of its association with historical figures of disputable moral character. Sexualmasochism falls under the general category of paraphilias, “abnormal or unnatural attraction.” Sexual masochism refers to recurrent, intense sexually arousing fantasies, sexual urges, or behaviors involving the act (real, not simulated) of being beaten, bound, or otherwise made to suffer. Blindfolding, spanking and humiliation in the form of defecation, urination or forced imitation of animals are other methods used by these patients. Masochists inflict pain upon themselves through shocking, pricking or choking and about 30% participate in sadistic behavior as well 7. Domination and Submission - is a set of psychosexual behaviors, customsand rituals relating to the giving and accepting of dominance of oneindividual over another in an erotic or lifestyle context. It is part of theBDSM group of paraphilias. BDSM is shorthand for bondage and discipline(BD), domination and submission (DS), and sadomasochistic play (SM)between responsible and consenting adults; just as consent separates sexfrom rape, so to does consent separate BDSM from abuse. BDSM is not apsychological disorder. D/s is often referred to as the "mental" side ofBDSM. Physical contact is not a necessity, and can even be conductedanonymously over telephone, email or (more recently) instant messagingservices. In other cases it can be intensely physical, sometimes traversinginto sadomasochism. In D/s, one takes pleasure or erotic enjoyment out ofeither dominating or being dominated. Those who take the superior positionare called Dominants, Doms (male) or Dommes (female), while those whotake the subordinate position are called subs or submissives (male orfemale). A switch is an individual who plays in either role.a. bondage: use of physical restraints to achieve various degrees of immobilization b. discipline: practice which produces discomfort for the purpose of sexual or emotional arousal c. domination: imposing one's will on another for
