Underlining- involves lining each major pieces of the garment individually, its is less !! ! costly than lignin because it requires little additional labor, does have all seam !! ! allowances and other construction details exposed on the inside!! 4. Interlining- applied strictly for additional warmth, included in cold-weather garments !! ! such as coats and jackets, includes all materials inserted for warmth between the ! ! garment body fabric and the lining!!Shoulder pads- made of molded foam, layers of cotton or wool wadding, or polyester fiberfill, !! used in jackets, coats, dresses, and blouses!Sleeve headers- folded narrow strips of bias cut lambs’ wool, trailer’s canvas, or fiberfill, sewn !! into the sleeve cap of tailed coats and jackets to create a soft roll in the cap of the sleeve!Collar stays- thin strips of plastic inserted into the point of collars on dress shirts to prevent !! curling or wrinkling, may be permeant or removable!Boning- used in the bodice bras, corsets, or strapless dresses, can be made of steel, plastic, or ! polyester rigilene!Seam tape- narrow woven strips of fabric, similar to ribbon, can be used to stabilize the ! !! shoulder seam on a knit top or to establish the roll line of the jacket lapel!Bra cups- often added to garments such as swimsuits and strapless evening gowns to provide !! shape and support to the bust-line, usually made form fiberfill or foam!!Findings and Trim!!Findings include: support materials, closures, thread, elastic, labels!Thread types: !! 1. Spun thread- consists of staple fibers spun into single yarns, spun polyester is the most common, made of elastic, is abrasion resistant, suitable for noncritical seams!! 2. Core spun thread- a spun core of polyester or nylon wrapped with cotton or other fibers, fine, stronger than spun threads, elastic, less apt to cause puckering, subject to needle heating, usually the best choice for critical seams!! 3. Filament thread- had limited use, clear thread resembling a fishing line, monofilament is the most common, multifiliment is very strong and abrasion resistant, however it is too strong for many fabrics !!Appliqués- a surface decoration formed by thread, fabrics, and non-fabrics!Embroidery- thread patterns on surface of fabric or garment, usually lustrous threads including monograms!Screen printing- application of a printed design as a form of surface embellishment!Ruffles- strips of fabrics gathered to add fullness and attached to garment!basic types of labels and methods for attaching!index reference!!!Garment Assembly!!Parts+panels= pieces!Construction Sequence:!! 1. Parts assembly- edges serged, labels attached, decorative stitchings added, trims !! ! added, pockets set and belt loops added, zippers applied, interfacing and !!! ! reinforcements applied!! 2. Panel assembly- darts, pleases, tucks, ease, gathers, seams and edge treatments, !! ! elastic, hems!! 3. Piece assembly- collar set, sleeves set, cuffs set, waistbands, shoulder pads ! !! ! attached, lining applied!! 4. Product assembly and finishing- buttons attached, buttonholes/button loops made, !! ! hooks and eyes attached, miscellaneous closures, applied, finish pressing done!!Single-needle tailoring is a mark of quality.!Seams sewn in round are preferable to those sewn flat.!Continuum of label quality!index reference!!Quality!!Quality features- the physical features of a garment determine its performance!Determinant attributes:!! 1. Aesthetic performance!! 2. Functional performance!Extrinsic attributes- price, image, brand name(reputation of the brand), reputation of the retailer!Price zones- couture, designer, contemporary, bridge, better, moderate, budget, juniors/tweens!Perceived quality model- overall quality score= sum of (weight of @ feature x rating of @ feature)! Methods of assuring quality- pre production quality assurance, quality assurance during production, post production quality assurance!Specifications- define specifically how to meet the company’s standard!!Costing, Pricing, and Profit!!Pricing Strategies:!! 1. Status/Prestige!! 2. Market Penetration!! 3. Market!! 4. Cost Based (takes the cost of producing any product or service and adds the amount needed to make a profit)!Sell through- percentage of merchandise sold at full price!Phases of costing- cost sheet is a budget of what the product developer thing sit will cost, the costing process determines if the product is profitable!! 1. Preliminary or Precosting!! 2. Producting costing!! 3. Actual costing!Tariffs- are taxes paid to a government for importing!Quotas- limit the quantity of items that may be imported !!!!Planning and Production!PERT (Program Evaluation and Review Technique):!! 1. Events!! 2. Activities!! 3. Critical paths! !3 Types of Distribution:!! 1. Distribution Center (DC)!! 2. Distribution Center Bypass- inventory reduction, decreased handling costs, decreased ! transportation and fuel cost!! 3. Cross-Docking- used to change type of vehicle/transportation, sort goods for different !! destinations, combine goods for different regions!Production Considerations- scheduling is based on a manufacturer’s ability to: meet quality standards in a timely manner, up-to-date production equipment, computer communication, technology!! Three major considerations:!! ! 1. Throughput volume- a measure of production capacity!! ! 2. Throughput time- the time required to produce a single unit from beginning to !! ! ! shipment!! ! 3. Work in Process- the number of garments under construction at any given time !Progressive Bundle- tradition assembly line in sequential order, small parts + major parts + trim work, operators paid b piecework based on SAMS!Unit Production System- garments are introduced to the operator via an overhead transporter, the transporter moves garments from stations to stations, if quality is not met it is
