Adventures of Samantha WildernessObjectives:Students will join Samantha Coral and her adventures through the coral reefs that surround the Great Barrier Reef near the Australian coast. Students will test their knowledge of coral reefs, island formation, volcanoes, seamounts, trenches, and other things will helping Samantha with her search for the treasure chest of pearls. Recommended Grades: This activity is intended for grade levels 6th-8th Materials:- Chest or Box- Candy, toys, or other treats- Deck of cards with the questions of the game- Six or more game pieces (Fish, Volcano, Coral, Mountain, Island, and Submarine)- TimerPreparation: 1-2 days prior to game play- Read through instruction very carefully - Teachers must review with students the questions in the game (make a lesson out of the questions on the cards).Rules:- No writing utensils are to be used throughout the game by the students.- Students must clear off their desks and remove any books, dictionaries, PDAs, cell phones, laptops, I-pods, I-phones, etc. - Make sure you have FUN!!!Playing Adventures of Samantha WildernessObject of Game:Be the first team to make it to the Great Barrier Reef with Samantha.Setup:The teacher will separate the students into six groups of five (or create groups according to the size of the class). The reefs (Warrior Reef, Osprey Reef, Willis Group, Saumarez Reef, and theGreat Barrier Reef) will be used as the different levels of the game (the reefs are in ascending order here). The teams will be signified with the following game pieces: Fish, Volcano, Coral, Mountain, Island, and Submarine. Team Fish will go first following Team Volcano, Team Coral, and so on. The teacher is allowed to shuffle the cards which are labeled with different symbols in order to represent different categories. The volcano cards will be used to describe volcanic activity, the island cards will be used to describe the interactions that occur with islands and coral reefs, and the fish cards will be used to describe the biodiversity and life in the coral reefs.Game play: Team Fish will go first and will be given the opportunity to answer the first question. Each card will be worth two points, and some cards have bonus questions on them which are worth one point. Each round will permit each group to have three turns. Students who answer the question incorrectly will not earn the point and the next group will be given a chance to answer it. The teacher will read out each question only twice for each team. Each team will have 30 seconds to answer the questions. The five teams with the highest points will be allowed to move on to Osprey Reef, and the four teams with the highest points will be allowed to move on to Willis Reef. The three teams with the highest points will be allowed to move on to Saumarez Reef, andthe last two teams will compete against each other in the Great Barrier Reef to help Samantha retrieve the treasure chest of pearls (candy). After each round the teams that remain must move their game pieces to the next location on the map. The teams that are left behind must leave theirgame pieces where they are, and they cannot participate in the remainder of the game.Winning:The winning team will go with Samantha Coral in the Great Barrier Reef, and they will share thetreasure chest of pearls (candy) that is located in there.Options:- Teachers may add additional questions to the game if they feel that they need to add moreto fit their lesson plan. - Students may ask the teacher to repeat the question one more time after the teacher has read the question once. - Teachers can create their own game piece if they would like
