Shawn RoyLubben Soci 2105Functionalist Perspective in PoliticsThe functionalist perspective takes a look at society on a macro level. It is an approach that sees society the same way people see the human body; a bunch of different organs working together to make sure the body functions properly. Various parts of a society include economy, education, healthcare, the environment and familyCandidates in presidential elections incorporate all of these components to appeal to the voters. The candidates and voters know that if all the various components like economy etc. are functioning properly, then their nation or society as a whole will function properly. In the United States of America, Presidential candidates use the functionalist perspective by talking about how they will improve the economy, healthcare, and education in order to improve the nation as a whole. When talking about the economy, each candidate will say how their plan will improve education and create more jobs so that unemployment will go down and families can help support their children. Once parents are able to find jobs, they can be ready financially to send their children to college and get a decent education. Those children will then find jobs and become tax payers and those tax dollars is what the government depends on to keepthemselves running. The families depend on the government to provide education and jobs, the children depend on education and government to have a job and pay taxes, and the government depends on those taxes to function properly. If this cycle works perfectly, the different parts create a functional society with stability and productivity. However, if one of the different parts interferes with another, the tasks the components are trying to complete will be dysfunctional. For example, if the government forces people to pay a lot of taxes, then businesses will not beable afford as many workers which will increase unemployment and make it harder for parents toafford letting their children go to college. When it comes to running this country, many people and politicians have a functionalist perspective and know that each component of a society ties intogether and each part must function properly in order to keep a properly running
