History of the US since 1865 Final ReviewThe 3rd Party System and the Rise of the Republican Party (1854-1865)3rd Party System-- Growth of National Government- Modernization and Growth of Industry (Railroad)- Abolition of slavery and race relations- Trade ProtectionismPolitical Realignment-- A lasting change in the arrangement of political forces, a change in issues, or a shift in regional and demographic bases of power.- Generally results in a new political power structure that lasts decadesKansas-Nebraska Act (1854)-- Introduced by Democrats- Repealed Compromise of 1820 -> Made it illegal to have slaves in certain territories- Citizens allowed to decide on slavery -> Popular sovereignty- Result: Contributed to Realignment and Rise of Republicans with anti slaveryRepublican Party-- Founded by anti-slavery Whigs and Democratic members- Against the expansion of slavery- For protectionism- Increase tariffs to promote domestic tradeo Tariffs-tax on imported/exported goodsPaper Currency-- Demand Notes (Greenbacks)-paper money backed by goldo Issued too many and the notes were devalued- Legal Tender Notes-Not backed by gold, and had value because the government said they dido Fiat Money- money declared by the government to be a legal tender.
