Intro• The state gives us security, decreases chaos• In order for states to give us the benefits such as security, we must limit what actions people can do.• We can theoretically give our trust that the government holds power over people and that people can trust in the government• Is there a reason not to obey the law beyond avoiding punishment?Reasons for obeying the law Reasons against obeying the law• Avoid punishment• We have agreed to obey the law by living in a society• Agreements create obligations•• Self-Impulses• Conflict against convictions•• The question of why we should obey the law often comes up with the question of what gives legislature the power to make the laws• We can only be bound by an agreement that we ourselves have made as conscious human beings• People give tacit consent to the government• Tacit consent has characteristics:• Existence of a convention• Knowledge• Voluntariness• Beran makes the argument that we know when a promise is binding or not binding• A promise is not binding when it is coerced, forced, made out of deception• We can easily express our dissent with the law by explicitly stating that we do not agree to the law• Beran makes the claim that while we may not all know the rules of a state or how to dissent against those rules, but that we should know and have enougheducation to know the rules of a
