Chapter 7 PSY 2012 SpiresHuman Intelligence- The study of human intelligence was started in 1905 in France when the French government asked Binet and Simon to determine the probability of academic success in children.- Lewis Terman translated the test to be used in America and renamed it the Stanford Binet Test.o It is the second most popular intelligence test in Americao It measured verbal abilities- Wechsler said IQ test should be based on more than just verbal abilities and developed three IQ tests of his own.o WPPSI Measures preschool-age childreno WISC-R Measures middle-aged childreno WAIS-R Age 16+o Each consists of 6 tests that get progressively more difficulto Gives 3 grades: Verbal IQ, Performance IQ, and Full IQ - The formula for calculating IQ is:Mental AgeChronological Age× 100 %=IQ- The mean IQ score is 100 and the standard deviation (δ) is approximately 15.- IQ tests are written for the northern part of the country, Caucasians, and middle incomeand above.- Divergent Thinking – coming up with many possible answers- Convergent Thinking – coming up with answers that the test question is looking for- Fluid Intelligence – general mental abilities- Crystallized Intelligence – specific mental abilitiesPage 1 of
