relationships Schools may have better resources to teach the topic than families Abstinence Only Education what these classes teach Millions of dollars were set aside for abstinence only education in 96 To qualify for funding programs must teach o Positive aspects of abstinence o Abstinence is standard that is what you should expect it is a o Abstinence is the ONLY option for avoiding pregnancy STIs etc o Mutually monogamous sexual relationships as standard for marriage o Physical and psychological side effects stem from sexual activity outside of the context of marriage o Having out of wedlock children is harmful to the parents child and standard society o How to say NO and the potential relationship between drugs and alcohol and sexual behaviors o The importance of being self sufficient before having sex Self sufficient being able to live on your own pay all your bills you are mature you should be able to at least be able to take care of yourself before putting yourself in the position to take care of a baby o Self esteem o Self control o Decision making o Goal setting wont have any sexual contact before being in the relationship for 4 months example o Character education Cant be defined so how can they teach it o Communication skills must be able to talk to partner huge aspect o STD s o Parenthood Aims to teach o Anatomy Abstinence Only Lessons Sex outside of marriage may result in o Pregnancy or fear of pregnancy o STI s HIV rates high in young mid 20s HPV rates high o Guilt o Depression o Lack of self respect having tons of partners don t respect yourself o Multiple partners Do not address o Contraception o Other forms of sexual expression o Homosexuality Abstinence only supporters believe that the more you teach about sex the more people will have it so instead they teach only one option not to have sex Comprehensive Sex Education Comprehensive sex education provides different knowledge than abstinence only until marriage education o Contraceptive use o Safe practice of alternatives to intercourse o Homosexuality o Stay more in line with messages from the media etc o Reflects reality that most people do have sex before marriage o Relies more on critical thinking skills and decision making Core values o Every individual has dignity and self worth o Sexual relationship should never be coercive or exploitative o All sexual decisions have effects of consequences o Every person has the right and obligation to make responsible sexual choices o Encourages integration of the above into family s values and exploration of personal values Underlying Skills Learned Ideally Understand health promotion and disease prevention Consider the influence of peers family media etc on their behaviors Be able to determine which products and services can accurately assist them with their health Learn communication skills to help with their own health and reduce their risk taking behaviors Use decision making skills correctly with decisions underlying their health Make goal setting benchmarks to enhance their health Demonstrate the ability to practice health enhancing behaviors and avoid or reduce health risks Learn to advocate for their health and that of their family and community Consequences f Teen Parenting Some consequences of teen parenting that are taught o Poverty o Less likely to earn a diploma o Abuse and neglect of children o Child less likely to earn diploma o Child more likely to become a teen parent o Child more likely to be a delinquent Costs to society o Foster care o Welfare Teen Parenting Declining Possible explanations o Abstinence only until marriage education o Virginity pledges a lot of times with their churches o 16 pregnant actually show the hard times that go along with being a teen mom has helped to decreased teen pregnancy o Comprehensive sex education teaching about contraceptive use Opt Out Options parents have the option to take their kids out of sex education Regardless of what is taught teaching any form of sec education may conflict with personal beliefs Parents may prefer to be the source of children s information regarding sexuality Legally parents maintain a right to opt out of school lessons o Sincere concern o Substantial burden on the students religious liberty o Appropriate alternative must occur unless deemed impossible In reality o Children are often given the option to opt out if they are uncomfortable regardless o Relatively few parents do actually pull children from sex ed o Alternative may be no sex ed at all o Parents may not have knowledge to educate themselves or may not really do so o Other health topics in school do not have an opt out option o May not be realistic to opt out if incorporated in to other topics o If not taught by parents or school children will turn to media for information o Parents can work with schools in school The Future of Intimacy The Hook Up Culture Past o Physical encounters typically occurred after a number of dates o Sex was often reserved for marriage or committed relationships o Dates were to get to know someone have a good time together Not just to get them in bed Now o Physical counters often occur instead of dates no emotional bond o Sexual component comes first a date isn t necessary at all to have the physical component o Intimacy goes further more quickly o One night stands Reality later marriage harder to wait until marriage to be sexually active o Seeking a life partner may not even begin until 20 s Believing that everyone else is sexually active increases pressure o Viewed as immature or weird if you re not sexually active Relationships No rules or precedent to follow o Level of hooking up variable by person o Alcohol often involved causes confusion about situation The alcohol could be a cover protection don t need anything else I was drunk move on Serves as excuse if unhappy with outcome o Confusing how relationship should pretect No need to build foundation of a relationship just hooking up o Don t have to worry about someone cheating someone dumping you breaking up No worry about emotions in reality emotions come into play
