Enslaved Africans in America tried to incorporate their dancing/drumming into the predominant Protestant religion – drums were forbidden – incorporated clapping and stomping – used circle shuffling to cover up dancingh. Dance was proper, formal, and learned – came from Europe – danced in couples – ballroomi. Lindy hop ended up being taught formally and changed to the jitterbug (swing dance)i. Lindy hop was more smooth and loose; mostly used movementfrom hip downii. Jitterbug was more staccato and jumpyj.
