Leona Jane P. Dagami August 24, 2020 BS Civil Engineering 7:00-8:00 am 1. What new ideas about mathematics did you learn? - Since I read the content I've learned a lot about mathematics. All the information was really helpful because some of these are things new for me and some refresh my mathematical knowledge. One of the ideas I have learned is that there are many patterns on mathematics, and I only remembered four patterns which I received when I was in grade 10. The arithmetic, Fibonacci, harmonic and geometric series are included. I also have learnt various functions and profound meanings of mathematics that I can use every day, in particular in paper work, reasoning and more. The idea of the golden ratio with the golden spiral also caught my attention. It says it was used a thousand years ago and I hear the phrase for the first time. How I wish I knew it before, because it is really fascinating in nature. 2. What is most useful about mathematics for humankind? - Dean Schlicter says, " Go down deep enough into anything and you will find mathematics." However, others argue that mathematics are not so helpful in their lives but if we look at this more closely, it will show how math work even in the smallest thing in the world. Mathematics is most useful to us humans as it allowed us to calculate, measure, add, deduct and apply mathematical processes from which we have learned. In architecture, carpentry, engineering, physicians, chefs and even ordinary people who stay at home, mathematics has been relevant because it is the only way to help people perfectly plan, create and measure everything. To sum up, mathematics is most useful to us as it allows us to make anything we wish and achieve whatever we need. We are also nothing without mathematics, because everything in this world contains mathematics. 3. The Blind Men and the Elephant is a famous Indian fable that tells the story of six blind sojourners that come across different parts of an elephant in their life journeys. In turn, each blind man creates his own version of reality from that limited experience and perspective. How you relate this story in the study of mathematics? - The story of six blind people and the elephant is based on what they have touched because they cannot see and is the only way for them to describe the elephant. Just like the study of mathematics, there are also a lot of mathematicians and even ordinary people who have different knowledge about it because they have done things involving mathematics as well. However, people consider their side only because it's the only thing they knew and were biasing in their perspective. They must therefore look at the other parts and put them completely to know the truth. To put it briefly, the story of blind men and elephant and the study of mathematics is related, because if we’ll only see one side of the story, we won't be able to know the truth because we don't have enough evidence to prove our assertions.
