course is set up so that the instructor or TA can decide if they want to do a live lecture or pre record the lecture All lectures will be recorded and provided to the students via CCLE We highly recommend that you join any live activities as we believe this will greatly improve the remote learning experience Dr Alison Lipman will give live Zoom lectures during scheduled lecture times She will record these lectures and post them to CCLE the day after class We highly recommend you attend these Zoom lectures in real time as you will be able to ask questions and participate in lecture activities However if you cannot attend these lectures in real time you will be able to watch them on your own time after class The second half of the course will be taught by Dr Gorlitsky She will record her lectures prior to class time and post them on CCLE She will have a weekly discussion office hours during scheduled lecture time to go over material that you do not understand Please be aware that live Zoom lectures and discussion section mini lectures will be recorded so they can be posted to CCLE This means that your video image may be recorded as well as your voice if you speak during class These videos will only be posted to CCLE and viewable by other students in the class They will not be shared with any outside parties It is illegal for anyone to share these videos with any person who is not a student in this course We recommend having your video always on during lecture and discussion so that your instructors can get to know you however you do have the option to Behavior Spring 2020 COURSE OBJECTIVES EEB 100 is a separate class from EEB 100L and must be taken before or concurrently with 100L EEB 100 is a required prerequisite for a number of upper division EEB courses The learning objectives of this class include 1 Gain foundational knowledge in ecology and behavior 2 Understand the process of scientific research particularly in regards to formulating and testing 3 Analyze results and be able to critique studies from the peer reviewed scientific literature 4 Develop an appreciation for the diversity of behavior and ecological processes 5 Develop an appreciation for the natural world in terms of biodiversity conservation and 6 Understand the role of theory and quantitative methodology in contemporary ecological and hypotheses sustainability ethology 7 Understand the relevance of ecological and behavioral to a variety of contemporary problems 8 Enhance oral scientific communication skills Participation is mandatory We will have weekly edition You can buy the 11th edition at the bookstore or the 10th edition online COURSE ELEMENTS Participation CCLE to make sure that you are viewing and keeping up with the course material The lectures will be recorded and posted on Zoom While notes will be posted on the course website they are intended to be summaries of course themes and are NOT complete transcripts of lectures Exams course including all assigned readings and videos videos shown in class and articles discussed in discussion sections Questions on the midterm will be multiple choice and the final will be a combination of multiple choice and short answers There will be no re grades due to the size of the course No calculators smart phones or other electronic devices will be permitted The exam will be given on CCLE The final will cover only the second half of the course No make up tests or early exams will be given The only exceptions are for medical emergencies such as documented hospitalization Missing an exam will result in a fail not an incomplete an incomplete in the course must be approved before the final exam Discussion Sections 20 points and participation in discussion will be worth 20 points During discussion you will learn to critique and analyze scientific papers which you will read before each section A total of 60 points will be earned in each discussion section for submitting six reviews of articles there are detailed instructions posted on CCLE under Discussion Materials Articles The assignments must be turned in online through TurnItIn use the Turnitin Assignments link on the course website prior to the start of your discussion section to receive full credit The articles will be posted on CCLE Any plagiarism on the weekly discussions will result in a zero and be reported for academic discipline The midterm and final exams will include all material covered in lecture and assigned for the Discussion is worth a total of 100 points You will give
