Many factors contributed to setting my college education into motion, but the most pertinent was to restore my self-purpose, setting an excellent example for my son, and timing. I had felt for years as though my only real contribution to my family was raising our son; I felt as though I had no clear purpose within myself. I needed to show my son that college is beneficial, possible and that it is never too late to achieve your goals. Most importantly, the timing had to beright to allow me to put forth all my energy into school. When all these factors began to intertwine, opportunities made themselves apparent and available, leading me to enroll in collegeofficially.I was at a point in my life where I was feeling purposeless and that I had nothing left to contribute to my family without furthering my education. Becoming a mother at such a young age made me the center of an overwhelming amount of gossip, doubt, and judgment. At the time,I felt that the best way to prove all the nay-sayers wrong was to put all my attention on being a mother. While I am proud of how well we have raised our son, I did a disservice to myself by notplacing a portion of my emphasis on self-discovery. In the blink of an eye, our son headed into kindergarten, and I was left with a meaningless job at the local gas station. I was working a dead-end job, our financial situation was grim, and I began to feel that I had nothing left to offer to myfamily or myself. The one moment that I felt truly in my element was while helping our son with his homework. He reminded me so much of myself with his true love and determination for learning. Each piece of homework that I helped with created tiny sparks within me, begging me to plan my education to give myself a real purpose. This was when the thought of furthering my education truly entered my mind.Education has always been of utmost importance in our household, but I wanted to truly practice what I was preaching and show our son how important it is. I knew I had to show myson how to continue his education, no matter what path he takes in his life. I knew that if I startedcollege, it would be a powerful life lesson for him. Starting college at my age, with my history, proves that where there is a will, there is a way. It demonstrates the vital lesson that nothing is impossible, no matter how far out of reach something seems to be. These are all things that I, of course, can preach to him all day and all night. However, I knew deep down that if he could see me making these big moves happen, it would make a more significant impact. Once I fully realized that I could have a greater influence on him in that area if I went to school myself, the decision was solidified in my mind. The timing was a crucial component to the puzzle that is my educational journey. The timing had to be as close to perfect as possible so that I would have plenty of time to focus on school and continue to be a present mother and wife. As a teenage mother, I have had to do manythings out of conventional order in my life; college is no exception. Before my husband and I gotpregnant, I was the student obsessed over schoolwork, studying, and maintaining a 4.0 GPA. After becoming pregnant, I dropped out of school to pursue a GED to focus on being a mother, which marked my education's apparent end. It wasn't until my son was in school, thriving in his educational journey, that it became clear just how badly I missed education myself. Soon after this passion for school made a second appearance in my life, my husband landed an incredible job, which allowed me to quit my job and embark on my educational journey instead. I remember thinking to myself, "this is it; this is my time." The correct timing was the final push I needed to set my educational goals back into motion. While it is true that so many things influenced my final decision to enroll in college, finding my purpose, setting an example for my son, and making sure that the timing was right were the most significant factors. I knew that to feel the happiest within myself, I needed to findmy real purpose. I learned that the best way to teach my son about the importance of education was to lead by example. I definitively knew that the timing needed to be exactly right to complete every task that I am faced with daily, both at home and college. Once everything started to fall into place around me, I was wholeheartedly convinced and prepared to begin my college
