L. Haynes, PhD Research Methods 302 Research Project Exercise 1 (RPex1)DIRECTIONS: BEFORE YOU BEGIN…make sure that you have READ the chapters and PowerPoints in this exam unit (Ch’s 1, 2, 3, and 16) fully. By now, you should have also completed your APA Project which includes learning APA Format. Please read each question carefully, read each SAMPLE PAPER carefully, and then provided DETAILED responses to each question regarding EACH SAMPLE PAPER. Use as much space as you need to provide a complete response. SAMPLE 1 SAMPLE 2Paragraph 1: Is there a statement of purpose? Is(are) theresearch question(s) clearly stated? Does the writer give you a good idea of what this project is about and why it is important to do this kind of work? Describe what the writer does well vs. what is missing or needs work. * * * Please EXPLAIN – give more than yes/no responses throughout this assignment and for EACH of the SAMPLE papers you have been provided – NO CREDIT will be assigned to any answer that is just yes/no * * *The statement of purpose is very clear in the students writing. This was very well done. Although this paragraph was very brief it was still able to give a pretty good understanding of what was to be focused on in the paper. I think there could have been a little more detail added specifically in relationto why this work was important. This was not stated or hinted to at all and could be very beneficial to the readers understanding. This is one thing that needs to be worked on in the introductory paragraph. . Overall, this paragraph is written very poorly. There are mistakes in punctuation that can be distracting to the reader. Aside from grammatical errors, the purpose in the paragraph is not clear which is also distracting. There is a understandingof what the main point is but it is not portrayed well. There is not any information on why this kindof work is impactful aside from saying “it is very detrimental for the well-being of individuals to go through life without focusing on the privileges and positive aspects of the world.” As an introductory paragraph this needs a lot of work and needs to be more informative and cohesive. Paragraphs describing studies: Do these paragraphs include in-text citations of studies?Do these paragraphs include a description of the(a) research question, (b) participants, (c) materials/methods/procedure, (d) research findings, (e) meaning/importance of these findings; implications / applications?Regarding these points, what does the writer do well vs. what is missing or needs work?* * * Please EXPLAIN – give more than yes/no responses throughout this assignment and for EACH of the SAMPLE papers you have been provided – NO CREDIT will be assigned to any answer that is just yes/no * * *The student included in-text citation of four different studies that were previously done. In each of these they stated what the purpose of the study was. Theyalso stated what participants were used and the methodology that took place. This information madefor good comprehension and understanding of what was taking place leading to a good understanding ofwhy it was important. This as well as clear finings of these studies was very well done. The student stated the purpose of their study as well as what would be used to ‘measure’ happiness. These paragraphs do include in text citations of studies. The first study the student mentioned did not have very much information. It lacked detail onthe participants and materials/methods/procedure.The mentioned they types of studies done in the article but did not give any detail on them. There were positive and negative outcomes that were found in the study. of the several studies mentioned they are not explained well. They also do not support each other and work well to provide purpose. In a few of the studies more information was given, and the methodology was described and understood. In comparison to sample paper one there were not any numbers used. In my opinion giving statistics allows the reader to understand and ‘believe’ the results more. Last paragraph: (a) does the writer make a brief statement about the purpose/materials/methodology of the current study?(b) Does the writer state the expected findings (hypothesis statement)?Regarding these points, what does the writer do well * * * Please EXPLAIN – give more than yes/no responses throughout this assignment and for EACH of the SAMPLE papers you have been provided – NO CREDIT will be assigned to any answer that is just yes/no * * *The writer makes a statement that the purpose of the study will look into a multitude of activities other than gratitude and their happiness. The method thatthe student said would be use is the Pemberton The student stated that the study will look at the relationship between happiness and life success. There is not any information in this paragraph explain the methodology or the materials that willvs. what is missing or needs work?Happiness Index and the Happy Work Questionnaire. These will explore which activities that claim to promote happiness have a higher happiness score. The expected findings were not stated clearly stated but can be inferred buy the information provided in the paragraph. The writer does well give a brief overview of the study but should make the hypotheses clearer to the reader. be used in the study. The writer did not include a hypothesis either. The student needs to be more descriptive and include a better understanding of the purpose of the study as well as the methodology and the materials that would be used. They also need to work on including their hypothesis. APA format:(a) Does the writer use proper APA format for in-text citations?(b) Does the writer follow APA format for the header,title/title page, and body of the paper?(c) Does the writer use proper APA format in the Reference section of the paper?Regarding these points, what does the writer do well vs. what is missing or needs correction?* * * Please EXPLAIN – give more than yes/no responses throughout this assignment and for EACH of the SAMPLE papers you have been provided – NO CREDIT will be assigned to any answer that is just yes/no * * *The in-text citations in this sample paper are done very well. They are in the correct format in the paces necessary. The title of the paper is not boldedat the top of the first page; neither is the word ‘References’. In a student paper a running header isnot necessary. Page
