Assignment 2: Informative EssayTreating Animals HumanlyShelby HaakNovember 17, 2018Professor Rachel HaysEnglish CompositionAnimals have rights, just like humans have rights. Since they are the most advanced species it’s our job and obligation to assist the other animals that can’t help themselves. It should be known to respect all sentient living beings. The Laws and regulation should be applied to protect animals under immediate threat. Read the Laws below keep in mind that animals inhabited this planet before humans. Animal abuse in many states is not seen as a “crime” and as such many cases of animal abuse gounreported which leads to a few things happening- The animal/s end up dying in horrible and disturbing ways and conditions- The abuser is given no punishment (aside from the nasty glares from neighbors) - No new laws can be made to help protect the rights that a living being has to live- Animal abuse continue being seen as “not exactly against the law” thus night justice for the wrong doing Animal abuse in many states is not seen as a “crime,” and as many such cases of animal abuse gounreported which leads to a few things happening• The animals end up dying in horrible and disturbing ways and conditions• The abuser is given no punishment (aside from the nasty glares from neighbors) • No new laws can be made to help protect the rights that a living being has to live• Animal abuse continues to be seen as “not exactly against the law” thus night justice for the wrongdoingThe most common victims are Dogs, Cats, Horses, and livestock simply because they are more likely to live with humans as opposed to just living near humans. This makes it easier to abuse them as they are stuck living with the abuser day in and day out. Furthermore, the most commonperpetrators of animal abuse are men under 30 and women over 60 and tend to happen more in the rural and urban areas. In the USA and Canada, they have laws against animal cruelty, but each state defines animal cruelty differently. For example, here in Pennsylvania the definition and actions were taken against animal cruelty according to Straypetadvocacy.com, I listed the three most important ones. “wantonly or cruelly illtreats, overloads, beats, otherwise abuses any animal, or neglects any animal as to which he has a duty of care, whether belonging to himself or otherwise, or abandonsany animal, or deprives any animal of necessary sustenance, drink, shelter or veterinary care, or access to clean and sanitary shelter which will protect the animal against inclement weather and preserve the animal’s body heat and keep it dry. “ This is a summary offense with a fine of $50-750 and imprisonment up to 90 days. It is a Misdemeanor in the second degree if a person: “Kills, maims or disfigures any domestic animal of another person, or any domestic fowl of another person; administers poison to or exposes any poisonous substance with the intent to administer such poison to any domestic animal of another person or domestic fowl of another person; harasses, annoys, injuries, attemptsto injure, molests or interferes with a dog guide, hearing dog or service dog.” This is punishable with a fine of not less than $500. It is a Felony in the third degree if a person: “Kills, maims or disfigures any zoo animal in captivity; or administers poison to or exposes any poisonous substance with the intent toadminister such poison to any zoo animal in captivity.” This is punishable by a fine of up to $15,000 and up to 7 years in prison. It is a Misdemeanor in the first degree if a person: “Kills, maims, mutilates, tortures or disfiguresany dog or cat, whether belonging to himself or otherwise; or administers poison to or exposes any poisonous substance with the intent to administer such poison to any dog “(straypetadvocacy.com, 2010). It is important to show the exact Laws and how they are presented to the public. Maybe the people who do harmful activities to animals might think twice after seeing the Laws. Maybe they will feel that these penalties are sufficient enough, although it is believed that for the more financially stable abusers the fines should double as to hit them where it hurts…. the wallet. It's also a firm belief that anyone who participates in any form of animal abuse should not be allowed to own a pet until someone of state authority comes and see if you have the proper housing conditions. The adoption of a pet or purchase of livestock should be treated the same way we do with child adoption. Furthermore, treating past abusers the same way we would handle a convicted sex offender or pedophile would be a great option. They would actually reachout to our Government to create a law that puts a limit on how many pets can be owned on one property. Maybe the 45% of abundant and neglected animals would be smaller or even not existent.ReferencesGoogle.comStraypetadvocacy.comShelby Haak Personal experienceGrammarly blog.com,
