Carol KinneyProfessor KeathKinesiology 1409 December 2017Final Paper I decided to get my degree in Kinesiology because becoming a physical therapist has always been a dream of mine. The reason why I wanted to be a physical therapist was because I played in sports, and I think that my athleticism would make me like the job and I enjoy helping others. However, overtime in the Kinesiology major I changed my mind. I decided that being a nutritionist is what I really want to do. As I learned more about nutrition, I thought it was very interesting and I came to realization of how important it is to eat the right way. It is important how you eat especially for those with certain diseases or illnesses. My dad did not have the healthiest diet when I was growing up. In 2015, my dad started having stomach aches and he andmy family found out that he was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. He had to have chemotherapyalmost every day and take all different kinds of medicine. During this time, my dad hardly ate any food and lost significant weight because of the treatment. About six months later, on August 19, 2015 my dad had passed away. Becoming a nutritionist would be an honor regarding my dad because I would like to help others eat healthier to prevent sickness and to live a better life. I am passionate about promoting health, encouraging others to learn and discover how they can become stronger, healthier, and happier. In the late 19th century was when dietitians and nutritionist first started working in hospitals and the role of good nutrition in health began to be accepted (1). When nutrition and dietitian programs started to spread, nutrition careers became more popular. Overtime manyresearchers have learned about how much nutrition affects our health. A researcher from the Center for Science in the Public Interest explained how unhealthy diets have caused 678,000 deaths each year in the U.S., due to nutrition and obesity related diseases such as heart disease, cancer, and type 2 diabetes (2). Americans now understand that the food we put in our body is important to our health but many people still continue to eat unhealthily. A survey was conductedto find out more about what American’s attitudes were towards food and nutrition. In that survey,“54% of Americans said people in the U.S. pay more attention to eating healthy foods today compared with 20 years ago – the same percentage said Americans’ actual eating habits are less healthy today than they were 20 years ago. And while 73% of Americans said they were very or fairly focused on healthy and nutritious eating, 58% said that most days they probably should be eating healthier” (3). The importance of this study is to show how nutrition has changed overtimeand how people care about being healthier. What staying healthy means to me is to take care of your body and making it less prone to diseases so that one can enjoy life. There are many ways to make a better lifestyle: choosing the proper exercise, diet, and daily activity. I want to help others to choose the proper diet. Today, nutritionists have many different roles such as educating others on nutrition issues, creating a clinical nutrition treatment plan for clients, and researching the effects of nutrition on health and fitness. There are also many different types of settings that anutritionist could work in. Could be a clinical nutritionist, public health nutritionist, nutritional consultant, or a sports nutritionist. I specifically want to be a clinical nutritionist because I wouldbe required to assist patient’s nutritional needs and develop nutrition programs. I would get to help many different types of patients such as overweight, ill, or ones with certain types of diseases. However, there are some disadvantages to becoming a clinical nutritionist. Nutritionist may not be legally protected, but they are a regulated profession. The licensing requirements canalso be unclear and may vary from state to state, meaning that one may have to spend more time in college or training, which can be expensive and time consuming. Another disadvantage is hownutritionists may have to self-educate because scientists learn more about foods, vitamins, and the body as they keep evolving. The most important thing about this job is that it is about helpingothers become healthier. Also, nutritionists starting with just a Bachelor’s degree make a very decent salary (4). According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the median earnings for dietitians and nutritionists is close to $60,000 a year and the employment of dietitians and nutritionists is projected to grow to 14 percent over the next ten years (5). Considering that that obesity rates in 2014 have increased for women by 5.1 percent and men by 1.7 percent, nutritionists will becomeincreasingly important in the US and this will allow me to help others in the future and to preventthe obesity rates from growing. When I first walked in the office on the day of my job shadowing, I had no idea what to expect. I had never done job shadowing before, so it was a new experience for me and I was nervous and excited. I was planned for the whole day to shadow with a physical therapist named Timothy Drew. I got to the Upstate Physical Therapy LLC office at 1 o clock in the afternoon, which was right when Dr. Drew got back from his lunch break. He introduced himself and showed me around in the office. I learned that he is a graduate of Michigan State University and Nova Southeastern University where he received his Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology and Doctor of Therapy. He told me how he played professional baseball for twelve years, which I thought was very interesting. The very first thing that Dr. Drew and I did was set up the clinic forhis upcoming patients. He showed me how to properly clean the tables and the equipment. Dr. Drew then explained how the computer systems worked. He showed me on the computer how the clinic makes appointments for patients and how to evaluate each patient as they come in. Thefirst patient that came into the clinic for Dr. Drew had surgery on her hip two months ago. Dr. Drew would introduce me to each patient and what the progress has been like. I learned that this patient had been coming into the clinic for a month now and has improved each week. What I really like about Dr. Drew was that he had very good relationships with each patient, he remembered their names and had a good connection with each one. Through
