Module 2.1 CommentaryIn Module 2.1, we go from asking questions of “What am I?” to questions of “How did we get here?” In other words, we are going to consider stories that recount the creation of humans andnature on the earth. The selections I have chosen are from mythological/religious traditions (Boshongo People, the Bible) as well as a scientific writing (Hawking). Since many students have been raised in the Judeo-Christian traditions which rely on the Bible for accounts of creation, the readings from non-Biblical sources might be challenging to consider. This is where it becomes very important to look at the non-Biblical readings with objectivity and without prejudice. In fact, studying philosophy is all about learning to think about ideas with an openness to their possibilities. The first selection is a traditional African creation story that is very different from the stories found in the Bible. The manner in which the earth and humans are created is quite interesting. The next selection is from the Bible. However, there are two creation stories here. This text comes from the Middle East. The last selection is a scientific writing from the physicist Stephen Hawking. In Hawking’s writing, he describes the creation of the universe with the big bang theory.
