FUNCTION OUTLINEFUNCTION OUTLINECentral ClaimFOCUS What is the specific gender identity that your selected ad constructs? ISSUES What are the implications of the message conveyed in your selected visual mode on the society at large?Because of popular views of society, men feel as if they mustshow dominance over women, and if they do not meet certain standards they are considered weak and incompetent. Because of this, men who fall into this categorymay use resort to anger and abuse on others who are weaker than them. Society sets standards for both men and women that both genders feel as if they must live up to. If a person does not live up to the standards which are set for them, they may resort to other methods to feel better about themselves, such as violence. Society is what causes the problem and applies stereotypes to not only gender, but everything that gender plays a role in. CONTEXT (How do you plan to prove your argument? List and explain two elements of your argument that are necessary to prove your point.) In order to improve my argument I need to revise my introductory paragraph and make my points clearer and build on them throughout the essay. The first element that I want to talk about is the stereotypes and standards that society sets for each gender. These stereotypes and standards are developed by society and the opinions that we find to be common knowledge, such as who can do what jobs. Another elementthat I want to talk about is what happens if a person does not meet the expectations which are set for gender and the results of this. For example, if a man does not fall into the category of being an “ideal” man, they way resort to violence. Based on your responses above, re-write your central claim. (This claims should be two three sentences, it should include the information above, as well as, your argumentative position regarding your focus? Is your stance debatable?) Many men feel as if in order to secure their masculinity they must demonstrate dominance over others, mainly women, in ways such as having a lot of money, being physically fit, and clearly showing pure heterosexuality. We see this in every day life when it comes to competing for jobs, where it seems as if men always have the upper hand, especially if they meet the standards of the “ideal” man. Themost common misconception amongst society is the portrayal of women, believing that they are the lesser of men and cannot handle jobs and tasks which require raw strength and capability. Are there any words or phrases in above claim and your introduction that are repetitive and vague (gender roles, gender expectation, stereotypes, etc.)? List them here and be sure to revise these terms in the next draft. - Gender SUPPORT PARAGRAPHSSub claims or topic sentences for each paragraph should begin by introducing the element of the ad and then include the analysis of the element and how it supports your central claim (Write your sub claim here for par. 1):. The advertisement in place focuses on the superiority of men and contributes to the stereotype that in order to be considered a man you must show specific traits. ANALYTICAL POINT (how does this connect to your claim?): >Sub claims or topic sentences for each paragraph should begin by introducing the element of the ad and then include the analysis of the element and how it supports your central claim (Write your sub claim here for par. 2):In order to demonstrate our “manhood” and dominance over others, sometimes we go to extremes such as war, terrorism, or other acts ofaggression towards others who do not share the same views as us.ELEMENT(What is the element of the ad?): ANALYTICAL POINT (What is the analytic point of this element?):The man being shirtless and being the main point of attention while the woman is sitting in the back waiting for him. He has complete control over her and is using this power to his advantage. Men must constantly feel as if they are superior and in control of their surroundings. In order to feel this way some men will exert their dominance over women if they feel as if they are in competition with another man. This could result in the man taking his anger out on the woman or using a woman for his own pleasure, as seen in the ad. Men look as themselves are the superior to women and think of them as objects, not people, which is shown here.SUPPORTING DETAILS (Evidence, examples, illustrations, quotations, concepts, comparisons, etc.):ELEMENT (What is the element of the ad?): ANALYTICAL POINT (What is the analytic point of this element?): The expectations for men to be well fit, good looking, and be in control of their surroundings, such as the man in this advertisement living up to these standards. The analytic point Is shown by the man and women and all of the traits that they posses. In order to live up to the standards of being a man you must be in control and exert dominance over others no matter what the situation may be orwhat you have to do to gain control. This is a common stereotype for men that most men feel as if they must live up to.SUPPORTING DETAILS (Evidence, examples, illustrations, quotations, concepts, comparisons, etc.):- The placement of the man being in the front of the advertisement and getting dressed again opposed to the women who is in the background wearing nothing, looking as if she is just waiting for him. - . As stated by Johnson, “the “heroic male identity” as a capacity to feel outrage in the face of cruelty, to protect the powerless, and to heal those who are broken.”The man having complete control of the area and being the superior in the room, and to other men. Sub claims or topic sentences for each paragraph should begin by introducing the element of the ad and then include the analysis of the element and how it supports your central claim (Write your sub claim here for par. 3): In the eyes of most women, men are simply considered animals who would do anything for their own benefit and to have bragging rights over others. After you have completed this function outline, write a 200-300 word revision plan for your final draft. Include the changes you plan to make to this final draft and why you are making them. In addition to the explanation of the revisions you plan to make, discuss the various revision methods explored in this unit. Which of these methods was the most effective and why? Which of these methods was the least effective and why? The following
