Chapter 8 Essay Question and News Article Choose one of the Essay Questions for Chapter 7 and answer it with a short essay then read and summarize a current physics or technology news article. Part A:Newton thought that light was a particle, but we now know it consists of waves. What behavior makes light appear to be a particle? How do we know it is a wave? Light has been something that scientists have debated over for centuries. Newton originally thought light was a particle since then countless other physicists have shown how lightis not a particle but consist of waves. While light is now considered to consist of waves there are still some behaviors that make light appear to be a particle. The reasoning on why light used to be considered a particle is when a light touches a surface there is an emission of electrons which is of course considered to be particles. In experiments it is shown when these electrons cross paths with other light particles they “hit” them and that affects their speed. Because they hit themand then their speed is either slowed or becomes faster shows that they interact like particles. While light does have some behaviors that make it appear to be a stream of particles, light is still considered to be a wave. Physicists know this for many reasons but a couple examples are because light reflects in any way that a wave reflects, refracts and also diffracts. One of the first reasons light is considered a wave is because it does not just stop when it encounters an obstacle, it simply reflects off of it. The light reflects when it approaches any type of angle just like waves do. Light waves are able to follow the law of wave reflection in which is the angle that the wave approaches a flat surface is also equal to the angle at which is leaves the surface, which is what light also does. The second reason light is considered a wave is because of the refraction of light waves. Refraction is when light of waves goes from one medium to another, medium meaning object or substance, and bends to the way it needs to from those two mediums. Just like a wave does, observed light refracts from one substance to another. The third reason light is considered a waveis because the wave light behaves as it diffracts. Diffraction is when there is a change in directionwhen the light or wave travels through an opening of an obstacle or just around the obstacle. While light is not able to pass or bend in or around obstacles, it still is able to diffract. While it may not be that noticeable light still surrounds the object crating a shadow then causing the edges to look fuzzy. Light is still able to diffract just light a wave is able to which is able to help the reasoning behind why light is considered a wave and not just a particle or stream of particles.Part B:Find and read an article on physics or technology from some serious website. Give the link to thearticle, and summarize the article, drawing connections to class and/or explaining what you do not understand about the article. A recent discovery by a research team at Yale, now is able to better understand how dinosaur bones can survive for hundreds of millions of years under the ground. The fossil soft tissue that is found in dinosaur bones actually helps the preservation of the bones. This is news inthe scientific world because soft tissue is known to be the tissue that breaks down more rapidly than the harder tissue found in the bones and teeth of the dinosaur. Firstly, the soft tissue of a dinosaur is found in the blood vessels and nerves and they are located inside of the harder tissue of the animal. While these softer tissues decay more rapidly than the harder tissue they are still persevered in some structures that have been found. It has recently been discovered that thesesoft tissues were preserving themselves from oxidative environments like different limestones and sandstones. They over time are then shift into becoming Advanced Glycoxidation and Lipoxidation which have a very hard time decaying and breaking down. One thing that I do not understand is how it took scientist so long to discover the reasoning on why these soft tissues of dinosaurs are still preserved sometimes in the environment. Dinosaur bones are something that have been discovered for centuries, so what caused the major breakthrough to this discovery. Is there a new machine that made this discovery possible or was it just by looking at the information in a different way?
