Chapter 6 Essay Question and News Article Choose one of the Essay Questions for Chapter 6 and answer it with a short essay then read and summarize a current physics or technology news article. Part A: Discuss superconductivity. What is its value, and what are its limitations? How might it prove important in the future?Superconductivity is where there is zero electrical resistance in a substance that usually happens at very low temperatures. This theory was discovered in 1911 when scientists were observing, at very low temperatures, the properties in substances. When materials go below a certain low temperature, these substances are able to transition into a state where they are superconductive. This means the current inside that substance is able to move around without losing a bunch of energy. This state can be interrupted by a rise in temperature where it will then affect the outer material of the object. There are some limitations when it comes to superconductors. A very low temperature is needed for superconductivity and it is hard to achieve this low temperature and also very hard to maintain it. Another limitation is the materials that are superconductors tend to be more fragile, meaning that they are not ductile and can not be reshaped easily. The last drawback to superconductivity is that it is expensive to maintain the very low temperatures needed that superconductors need. Superconductivity is very important for our future. It is used in many devices today that are vital to the survival of the human race like the MRI machines. MRI’s are used to give many people medical diagnoses. An MRI is able to render an image of your body and what is going on inside. It is able to find tumors, heart diseases and even schizophrenia. This machine that usessuperconductivity is vital to our future and will only become more important as it is able to be used in more and more things. This type of application has only really just started to enter the market within the last 30-40 years. Superconductors will lead us into the future, they offer the chance to conduct not only smaller but even environmentally friendly transformers and generators that use superconductivity are able to become smaller in size. Find and read an article on physics or technology from some serious website. Give the link to thearticle, and summarize the article, drawing connections to class and/or explaining what you do not understand about the article. The kilogram will be redefined in the next month. It is just the start of a huge revamp to make the International System of Units (SI). There is an object the defines the mass of a kilogram, it is a cylinder that is made of metal. It is in a vault in France and is rarely taken out, but when it is a few atoms of metal are left behind each and every time it is taken out. The kilogram will be redefined based off of fundamental constants instead of basing a kilogram off ofa physical object. The kilogram is not the only measurement that will receive a new definition. The ampere, kelvin, and mole will also get new definitions. An ampere is the measurement of electric current. Kelvin is the measure of temperature and mole is the measurement of the amount of a substance. All of these different measurements will be altered soon. One thing that I am wondering is how this is going to affect the scientific world. Will this impact all of the measurements that has ever been taken of these materials?
