page 1 of 5 LAB SYLLABUS Kinesiology 470 Exercise Physiology Fall 2018 The lab section of KIN 470 is designed to provide undergraduate students an opportunity to objectively measure the physiological adaptations that accompany physical work in a variety of conditions. Application of material taught in lecture will enhance your understanding of the acute physiological responses to exercise and the chronic adaptations that occur with exercise training. General topics will include metabolism, measurement of work, power, and energy expenditure; cardiovascular and musculoskeletal function; and the physiology of performance. No text is required for this part of the class. However, you are REQUIRED to read the lab material, watch the online lecture before each lab meeting, and complete the pre-lab quiz BEFORE your lab section meets. Each lab experiment will be conducted in groups of 4-5 students who will work together. You should understand the procedures and be ready to perform the lab before your arrival. Everyone will be expected to participate on any given day. This may include vigorous exercise. Please DRESS APPROPRIATELY for lab. Failure to come to lab with the required lab materials and ready to perform the lab will be noted, and will negatively impact your lab grade. All lab materials will be posted on MOODLE. Lab Objectives: • To provide a foundation for understanding the human body’s response to exercise • To understand the physiology of fitness and exercise performance • To enhance your knowledge about assessment and interpretation of physiological changes during exercise • To learn how to use instrumentation to assess health outcomes Lab Instructors: Office Hours by appointment only – contact your instructor by email to schedule an appointment Matt Unger Office: Totman Rm 10 Office Hours by appointment only [email protected] Liam Fitzgerald Office: Totman Rm 10 Office Hours by appointment only [email protected] 2 of 5 ATTENDANCE AT LAB IS MANDATORY If you are not present for a lab, due to an unexcused absence, you will not be allowed to turn in a report for that lab. It is your responsibility to hand in all reports on time. Appropriate documentation is required if you are ill or have other extenuating personal circumstances that prevent you from coming to lab. Examples of appropriate documentation include a: 1) note from a physician verifying illness, 2) memo from the Dean of Students explaining the reason of absence, or 3) note from Head Coach verifying sport team travel. The note or memo should be given to your Lab Instructor within 1 week of your absence. It is your responsibility to arrange make-up work with your Lab Instructor. Students wishing to observe a religious holiday must provide advance written notification to the instructor by the end of the second week of classes. SPECIAL CONSIDERATIONS Any student with a disability (which is documented by Disability Services; 231 Whitmore Building) is required to contact Matt, Liam, or John within the second week of the semester so that we may work out reasonable accommodations to support your success in this course. Notification from Disability Services is required for accommodations to be made. ACADEMIC DISHONESTY: Please review the UMass Amherst Policy related to Academic Honesty, which is summarized in the KIN 470 course syllabus and is available online. As a condition of continued enrollment in this course, you agree to submit all assignments to “Turnitin” for textual comparison or originality review for the detection of possible plagiarism. This check will occur automatically when you upload your work on the course MOODLE site. All submitted assignments will be added to the UMass Amherst dedicated database of assignments at Turnitin, and will be used solely for the purpose of checking for possible plagiarism during the grading process for this term and in the future. If you are caught cheating, you will receive a zero for that assignment and any associated quiz. A second offense will result in a zero for the lab portion of this course. LAB GRADE: The Lab grade consists of 3 components, which make up a total of 30% of your overall grade for KIN 470. Lab Reports: 20% of KIN 470 Final Grade Each lab will require a written lab report. Most of these involve completing a Short Form Report consisting of Results and Discussion sections. The Discussion section of these lab reports will be directed by questions provided in the instructions for each lab. Full Lab Reports are required for Lab 3 and Lab 6 (bold and italicized in the schedule) and must include Introduction, Methods, Results, and Discussion sections. See “Laboratory Report Instructions” below for more details. Lab reports must be submitted electronically via MOODLE by the following Friday at 5:00 pm. Labs submitted after this deadline will be penalized 5 points (Note this is 5 points not 5%) for being late and another 5 points will be deducted every 24 hours they are late. No exceptions will be made. (e.g., Friday at 5:01 pm; -5 points; Saturday at 5:01 pm; -10 points.) Quizzes: 5% of KIN 470 Final Grade Prior to each lab, there will be an online quiz posted on MOODLE covering the upcoming lab’s material. Quizzes will be posted on Monday by 5:00pm one week before the lab, and must be completed the following Monday at 5:00pm. These quizzes will be timed. You must read the lab materials and watch the pre-lab video prior to beginning these quizzes, as you will not have enough time to go back and read for each question.page 3 of 5 Lab Presentation: 5% of KIN 470 Final Grade Midway through the semester, you will form groups of 3-4 people and pick a research topic from a short list provided by your graduate TA. You will identify one paper (needs to be approved by your Grad TA) which addresses an unanswered question on this topic. This process will require you to read multiple articles and determine what is known. You will then give a group presentation during the last week of class, discussing the article, e.g. introduction, methods, results and discussion. We will post a document on Moodle providing more detail on this assignment. Laboratory Report Instructions Laboratory reports must be typed; this includes captions, axis titles and units on all tables and figures. All lab reports must be written in the third-person, past-tense. The following instructions pertain to Full Lab Reports. Most of your lab reports will
